in an exclusive interview, a neighbor in the pullman, washington apartment building of suspect bryan kohberger says kohberger spoke to him about the murders. the neighbor asked not to be identified. >> he brought it up in conversation, asked if i had heard about the murders, which i did. and he said yeah, it seems like they have no leads. it seems like it with australia crime of passion. at the time of our conversation, it was only like, you know, a few days after it had happened. so there wasn't much details out. >> reporter: also tonight, the search warrant for kohberger's washington apartment has been sealed temporarily. a judge saying the details could, quote, prematurely end the investigation and create a threat to public safety. meanwhile, just six miles away at the university of idaho, students are returning to class today for the first time since kohberger's arrest. many, like freshman madeleine pollack expressing relief. >> i was kind of glad to see a lot of cops around just in case something did happen, they would be there. but it feels very relieving and like knowing he is behind ba

bryan kohberger has waived extradition back to idaho where he is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of fill knee burglary. authorities say he made the cross-country drive back to pennsylvania with his father who flew out to washington state to make the trip with his son. in nearly seven weeks since the four university of idaho students were killed investigators say they checked approximately 20,000 tips. moscow's police chief said authorities got more than 400 new tips after bow berger's arrest was announced. even though a suspect is in custody the investigation is far from over. jean casarez is in pennsylvania with more on kohberger's arrest and what happens next. but we start with veronica miracle in the relieved community of moscow, idaho, where the police chief says he has no regrets about the way his department handled the investigation. >> reporter: there has been such a sense of relief in this community now that the suspect has been arrested. of course, it doesn't change the fact that four gruesome murders took place in this seemingly safe town in this ru

the one that committed these murders. >> reporter: the alleged killer, 28-year-old bryan kohberger. f james fry confirming to abc news this white hyundai elantra, seen in surveillance video from a nearby gas station the night of the murders, belongs to kohberger, saying he was the only person inside. the car, now in police custody after being taken from kohberger's parents' home in pennsylvania. law enforcement sources saying police used dna technology to help track down kohberger 2,500 miles away. what was it like to start zeroing in on bryan kohberger? >> you know, it's stressful. you knew that this individual was out there somewhere. we knew that there was going to be an arrest made in pennsylvania. still, even though we're here, it's stressful here. >> reporter: kohberger living just 10 miles from the crime scene in pullman, washington, where he had been working towards his ph.d in criminology at washington state. >> to find out it was our neighbor, it was, like, very horrific. >> reporter: those who knew the alleged murderer left stunned by his arrest. >> it was just a shock. he

> reporter: wearing an orange t-shirt with cuts on his face-- the sheriff says from shaving-- bryan kohbergeray made his second appearance in an idaho courtroom. kohberger gave clear, single- word answers in response to the judge's questions. >> are you waiving your right to a speedy preliminary hearing and agreeing that that hearing can be held outside the 14-day period? >> yes. >> reporter: the preliminary hearing is now set for june 26, to give his defense team more time to prepare. that is when some of the state's evidence against kohberger will be revealed. police say d.n.a. found on a knife sheath, like this one, ties him to the murder scene. the defense will also have the opportunity to cross-examine witnesses, says cbs news legal expert and analyst rikki klieman. >> you have the ability to be able to discover more and more information, including what the investigators did not do. >> reporter: a judge will decide at the june hearing if there's enough evidence for the case to move forward. in the meantime, kohberger remains behind bars without bail. >> i think the family's a little surp

our first look at the evidence they said led to charge bryan kohberger.ments include dna evidence, cellphone data, and witness testimony. gary tuchman is in idaho tonight. he joins us now with a ground side perspective on how all that evidence may fit together. gary, talk about what you found. >> reporter: well, anderson, authorities have uncovered a lot of evidence in this case including an interview with a witness, a housemate who survived this rampage, referred to as d.m. in the affidavit. in the probable cause affidavit a moskow, idaho, police corporal said after finding the victims who were killed i noticed what appeared to be a tan leather knife sheath leaning on the bed. they uncovered a single match of dna on the knife sheath. according to the affidavit when police arrived they went through that door where the christmas wreath is. on the second floor to the right of the door is the bedroom where -- were killed. also on the second floor to the left of the back of the house according to the affidavit that's where the witness d.m. was. and finally on

>> it has probable cause to arrest bryan kohberger. now, what the defense is doing from this moment forward is attacking the reliability of the evidence starting with this probable cause affidavit and look, we got a lot of answers from the probable cause affidavit but also raised more questions, i would say. you brought a lot of them up talking to your last guest. when i look at the probable cause affidavit i say to myself the first clue that the police had was likely that surviving roommate, right? she gives a description. she identifies a man in the house at a particular hour who she did not recognize. then you've got the knife sheath but you don't know at this point if there will be any dna on the knife sheath. they had a big piece of evidence and i'm surprised that they have not yet investigated more of why the roommate did not report this for another 7 to 8 hours. that's a big deal. >> bill: you come at this from a criminal defense attorney's mind and you think of this in a different way. reading through the affidavit they have mo

and bryan kohberger is right here. his attorney tells me he's in isolation, waiting for his next court hearing tomorrow the extradition proceeding to get him back to idaho. the attorney confirms with me he talked with his client at length, describing to him the pros and cons and he has made the decision, bryan kohberger made the decision he will waive extradition to go back to idaho. now on friday morning, in the early morning hours, he was arrested right here in northeastern pennsylvania, in albrightsville, pennsylvania, small down, not far from here. why here? authorities say this is his home. this is where he was from. and cnn has learned that bryan kohberger's father flew to washington and drove with him home for the holidays. his attorney tells me they arrived about december 17th. we do know and a source is telling cnn that the fbi was surveilling him here in northeastern pennsylvania for four days before the arrest, at the same time law enforcement prosecutors were getting their evidence together to present to a
