cnn's brynn gingras is live at elmhurst hospital in queens where 13 people, brynn, have died in just the last 24 hours. >> reporter: yeah, john, is it bad to say it is not that surprising to me. we have been here all week and we have slowly seen the patients coming here every single day. more and more, earlier and earlier in the morning as the line behind me, i'll show you in a second. first, let me tell you, this hospital, elmhurst hospital is one of 11 public hospitals in new york city and it is being called the center of the crisis. this is why. look at all these people lined up, just to get some care. there is an extra tent here to deal with the amount of people that are coming into the emergency room. it is an annex to the er. there is a tent here for testing. that line, we just went by it not too long ago, it is snaking through. there is so many people and i can tell you guys, there is all ages. i didn't ask ages, but there is young and old, another reminder that this virus can infect everyone. at this particular hospital, it tells us daily they are getting supplies here. they'

cnn's brynn gingras has the details. how significant is this?> this is the biggest move we have seen taken so far here in the state of new york. the governor is going to define a containment area in a town west chester county where they're seeing this significant number of cases as you said, coming te ko combing the clusters. facilities are going to be closed and national guard is going to go in and help deliver food to home and help clean up public areas all during this two weeks. this is a significant move. 170 cases we know about in new york state, 108 of those cases are in west chester county, again with those clusters being in new rochelle. it seems sort of expanded ever since that case happens. again, we are still getting details of the definition of this containment area from the governor himself but those are the highlights there, john. >> we'll keep an eye on that. brynn, appreciate the breaking news. we are waiting for the president of the united states, he's going up to capitol hill. he's trying to propose a new step to help the econo

brynn gingras is there. tell us, brynn, the latest numbers today and what means for the response there in new york. >> reporter: yeah, well, the numbers just keep going up, jim. new york, obviously, as you said, the epicenter of this coronavirus in all of the united states. we've heard from the medical professionals saying the crush they're feeling on the hospitals. we're on the ground here in queens and we can see it for ourselves. let me show you behind what we can see. you can see there is a whole line of people with umbrellas in line in order to get to a tent, which is an annex, really, to the emergency room. jim, when have you ever seen this line of people just trying to get to the emergency room? this has been copied and pasted to hospitals all around new york city and areas around here. really, this means now that new york has changed its focus to only testing people who are at highest risk. basically, people who are coming in wanting to get tested, wanting to know if they had the virus, but they were

our national correspondent brynn gingras joins us again with the latest. what are the numbers telling us, what are the doctors saying this morning? >> reporter: yeah, poppy and jim, good morning. listen, it is all hands on deck. that is what governor cuomo is essentially saying has to happen here in new york. you almost get emotional looking at the comfort coming into new york city's port with the red crosses and american flag, and hope fortunatefully it does pro comfort for patients but comfort for the health care workers, the nurses, the ems, and the doctors. more than 2,000 deaths are attributed to this state alone. it's the grim reality. we're seeing resources flooded into hospitals not only in the city but across this entire state. it's needed. in fact, it's needed so much it might actually run out by the end of the week, according to new york city's mayor. we know just within the new york city hospital system, the ers are double the capacity of what they typically are, the icu units are three times larger than what they typically are. you'll see that

brynn gingras has this. gr brynn, what are they doing?rter: the theory here is that because the tri-state is such a mobile area, people live in different states and drive into the city, they need to put things on a really large scale. what happens is in new jersey, new york and connecticut, bars and restaurants are going to close, and that begins tonight. that means restaurants who serve food will be takeout only. bars that don't serve food are going to close. and then areas of entertainment are also going to be closed. that's talking about gyms and casinos, movie theaters. so this is all, of course, the cdc has recommended there should not be crowds of 50 or more people together. so this is the effort that these three states are banning together to take. in addition to that, poppy, new jersey is going even a step further. we're learning from the governor that he has enacted a statewide curfew, and that goes into effect immediately as well. 8:00 p.m. to, i believe, 5:00 a.m., only essential people who have to go to work, like nurses, doct

we lost brynn gingras there in new york. we'll come back to her, but let's go to louisiana now because this is clearly becoming a national problem. there are multiple hot spots around the country. the state there seeing a big increase in cases and deaths in the last 24 hours. the u.s. surgeon general is calling new orleans a hot spot nationally. cnn's diane gallagher is there with the very latest. diane, there has been a lot of focus on mardi gras as a possible accelerant to the spread in new orleans but also in the state of louisiana. what are the latest numbers there? >> jim, you mentioned the surgeon general, his prediction that next week things will ramp up even more. that is why they're trying to move in action right now. the convention center, which obviously opens up a lot of old wounds in new orleans, 15 years after katrina, that's what's going to be used for beds for covid-19 patients. 120 beds will be put in, and eventually it will hold up to 1100 beds. last night the governor, almost stern and angry sounding, said

our coverage continues with brynn gingras live in new york. brynn. >> reporter: i'm going to repeat a statistic that john said at the top. 5%. what we're seeing is a shifting to testing rather than care. the high-risk patients are going to be the ones that receive a coronavirus test. this is to help alleviate some of the pressure that's on hospitals and medical offices and also really just to save on equipment. we're also starting to see, as you can see behind me, blue tents erected at public hospitals across the city. this is also another step to try to alleviate the pressure on ers and to have a safe space for testing. this all happening as the mayor has said, sounded an alarm that this city is going to run out of medical equipment very soon. president trump ramping up federal assistance and deploying the national guard to california, new york, and washington state. >> through fema the federal government will be funding 100% of the cost of deploying national guard units to carry out approved missions, to stop the virus. >> reporter: the presi

brynn gingras, thank you so much. shimon, you're outside in manhattan. tell us how this process is likely to unfold and how quickly. >> reporter: how quickly is a great question, john, because right now we don't know. what i've been told is that there are officials inside, they're doing a walk-through, getting a sense of everything inside and how they're going to construct these hospitals. what they're going to do is there are going to be four separate sections of these hospitals, federal hospitals. they're going to be divided into four sections with 250 beds each, making 1,000 beds. what the governor has said, by having fema come in and do this, they bring the staff, they bring the equipment, and, of course, the ventilators. the critical equipment that we keep hearing the governor talk about, saying that we are going to need those ventilators. so with this, with the construction of these hospitals behind me here at the javits center, you're going to have that additional critical equipment. the other thing we heard at the governor's press conference, and

brynn gingras is our cnn national correspondent outside the law firm where this attorney works, and firstall, how is he doing? >> reporter: yeah, brooke, the latest update we got was from the governor himself saying that his condition was improving in the hospital, but just his whole family now has tested positive for the coronavirus. they're isolated in their homes. they can't visit him in the hospital right now. i mean, it's just sort of the more micro, you know, issue of people being tested positive for they all have to stay in their houses and away from other people. can't even visit her husband, this woman and her kids at this point. but anyway, that's just one example. we know now that he, as you said, is linked to a majority of the new cases here in new york, but there are 22 overall in the state, four of which, including that lawyer, who are hospitalized at this point, and disease detectives here in the state are continuing to sort of do their work of trying to trace people who had any connection to anyone who tested positive in the state, track those people down, give them a test

joining us now, brynn gingras. what seems to be key here, right, is how this case was transmitted. >> exactly what we know from the governor who just gave a news conference is he's a 50-year-old man, westchester county, new york, but travels into manhattan as an attorney for every day. and the concern is that he has not gone to china, has not gone to one of the high risk countries, so it is very likely this is the first confirmed community spread type of case we're seeing here in new york city. it is important to also note that the governor juxtaposed the two confirmed cases we have here. the 39-year-old we were talking about yesterday, healthcare worker that travelled to iran recently, and this gentleman who right now is currently hospitalized, but he had underlying respiratory issues. being hospitalized in new york city. he wanted to make it clear, yes, this is concerning to everyone, because he might be the first community spread, but they're two different cases as far as how they're being quarantined and handle

the governor says it is probably outside the largest cluster in the united states, our brynn gingras is in new york and our senior medical correspondent, elizabeth cohen. and there is more of what is 100 cases now outside of new york city. all eyes have been on the pacific northwest and washington state. tell us more of what we know about the containment plan of this cluster. >> this is a very dramatic move by governor cuomo. he was from new rochelle and the cases kept ongoing up ever since that positive test. that's the area we are talking about. the containment area. it will be a mile radius of new rochelle. schools are going to be closed and large facilities like places like worships are going to be closed and businesses will be closed. the national guards are going to come in and help bring food to people in their home and clean out public areas, all for a two-week period beginning of two days. we'll talk about disruption of life. it is going to be a serious disruption of life as this particular area as you said the governor is saying this may be possibly the biggest cluster that

. >> cnn brynn gingras joins me from new rochelle. and brynn, tell me everything you know. >> reporter: yeah, brooke, we're on main street new rochelle. it is quiet at this hour and likely more quiet in two days time when the national guard comes to town and starts that two-week containment period. as you laid out for viewers, the idea is to shut down areas of large gatherings. that is not necessarily to tell people to stay in their homes unless they've already been given that order by public health officials, it is more of shutting down those areas with where people gather to help contain the virus within this area. which is really a hot spot, the governor calling it likely the biggest cluster in the entire united states. so, like you said, the national guard will come to town and schools will shut down and businesses and church, synagogue and the list hasn't been laid out just yet between the state and local officials here on the ground. but we expect to hear more about that in the very near future. and when the guard is here, the na

let's start with brynn gingras. she's joining me now. brynn, you are focused in on what millions of americans are going to be going about their work in a very different way. what are you picking up? >> reporter: first it was companies limiting travel, don't go outside the country, now they're saying the next phase, saying, can you work from home if at all possible. the governor and the mayor asks employers can you shift the hours, can you shift the days your employees work? just in new york city to not have such an impact on rush hour because of the congestion on subways and the commuting overall. these are the sort of changes that are going to start evolving, especially coast to coast. bigger companies we've seen ask for telecommuting. of course, google, amazon, facebook and microsoft. they're asking employers if they can to work from home. everything is sort of shifting and evolving, again, from that don't travel to now stay at home if you can work. of course, the thing here, though, only big companies, really, can ask their employees t

let me get over to brynn gingras. she's been following the very latest on these new announcements coming from new york, coming from new jersey and connecticut. brynn, we just heard new restrictions and new actions being put in place just now from andrew cuomo. what's the top line? >> reporter: yeah, and this has been how the governor has acted. essentially, really, it's important to know, kate, he said we have to do this because criticizing the federal government saying they're not doing enough. and really, the big headlines that come out of this, kate, is the fact that the three states, the tri-states, new york, new jersey, connecticut, have banded together and sort of said that they are now going to shut down a lot of places in order to really get control of this coronavirus. so, essentially, restaurants that sell food, they'll be able to do takeout-only orders. bars that don't sell food, just alcohol, well, they're going to close, as are gyms, movie theaters, casinos. and the idea here, as cuomo nicely put it, was t

brynn gingras is in new rochelle where testing is underway. what can you tell us? >> reporter: we have seen a number of cars coming through here. what's happening is behind me you can see people keep your windows close as a safety measure and police with masks on. they assist these cars and telling them to head down to the island where the testing is happening. three tents set up with six different lanes so cars can go through. they don't have to get out their car. they are swabbed by a medical personnel which go to a viral and sent out to a lab and takes 24 or 48 hours for results to come back. the state can do 200 tests daily. they are boosting that capacity by next week to have 5,000 tests done here. they are prioritizing those tests. we know about the test shortages to people in new rochelle because there is a cluster here and hopefully they can expand that to residents of this area and those who needs the test most. >> brynn, thank you so much. >>> joining me now is dr. paul sa sacs. thank you so much for being here. where is the country testing and where does

our brynn gingras joins us this morning. what is the state of play in the city that is suffering the most from this right now, just at least in terms of sheer numbers? >> reporter: yes, sheer number that, in fact, poppy, we are starting to see the landscape of new york city change before our eyes. you guys mentioned comfort. in new york city's harbor, we have the javits center that's now going to be a hospital. we learned this morning that the place where they play the u.s. open, the tennis center, that's being transformed into a hospital with 350 beds. of course, you have this hospital behind me, a smaller version field hospital, but still transformed right here in central park where people typically go to exercise or sunbathe on a nice day. this hospital transformed just in days. a group out of north carolina, a christian group, came up here on saturday, and we're hearing patients will start going inside today. 68 beds in all. there is also a small icu unit taking patients, really, from all of the five burroughs, again, ju

brynn gingras is at liberty airport in new jersey. lots of international flights where you are. what is this screening process like? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. brianna, first let's go over those high-risk countries as set by the trump administration. we're talking parts of italy, south korea, china and iran. those are the high-risk countries as of yet. that could be expanded as the outbreaks around the globes continues. there will be dual screens for international travelers from those four countries. travelers, before they get on the plane, they are going to be screen screened, then once again once they are stateside. that screening process seems to be a series of asking a lot of questions, about where you have been, but also in some cases getting your temperature checked as well as other things. over the weekend we learned more about what the trump administration is doing, expanding that travel ban to iran. this is essentially for people traveling to iran. if you've been there the last 14 days, you won't be allowed back into the united states. we also heard vice president
