let's get right to cnn's brynn gingras, who is following this news. and this is a search at an alocation. brian, what can you tell us yeah, right now we're learning from a source that, john, that its investigators are might have or have conducted a search of a hospital on the upper west side of manhattan. >> now, last time i talked to you, remember, we talked about how police have been conducting some search warrants. we know that they did a search warrant at the hotel where thompson was staying. and now we're learning possibly where the suspect was staying. at an address on the upper west side, we're hearing from a source that it was a hostel. now, this does fit somewhat of the timeline that we also were hearing right, that he traveled early yesterday morning from the upper west side, possibly on the subway, carrying possibly an e-bike battery with him that he might have positioned closer here to the scene where i am, and then visiting that starbucks where police see on video that he purchased a water bottle and also to power bars before carrying out

let's go to brynn gingras in new york. and, brynn, you have some new reporting about a fake id that was also allegedly found on mr. mangione yeah. >> and, jake, we know that nypd investigators are there in altoona. they are working on this investigation. >> obviously trying to talk to mangione at this point and that fake id is key. let's talk about why because it is one of many that was found on mangione, according to sources. and let's take a look at it for your viewers. but police believe this new jersey fake id may be the same one that was used to check into that upper west side hostel that police knew was used prior to the murder happening last wednesday, so that would give it a direct connection to here to new york, to the possibly the crime. so that is a big piece of evidence that they found. of course, as you just heard, danny mentioned they also found that ghost gun that picture that john miller had that they believe possibly could have been made with a 3-d printer. they're going to run ballistics on that, but they

cnn's brynn gingras has been following this story closely and is with us now from new york. what can you tell us about the latest here, brynn? >> yeah. brianna. so you just said it there. the person of interest that's what the nypd is calling these images that they just released a short time ago, because they want to identify who this person is and talk to them, see if they have any connection to this gunman that they are searching for. for over the last 24 hours. so that is why they are being described as a person of interest. and we know from sources telling cnn that a canvas of video collecting video from the upper west side of manhattan led them to this hostel on the upper west side, and that is how they uncovered through a search of that hostel, these images that you were showing your viewers, showing this person with a mask down, giving a facial image, very striking facial image. because in one of those pictures, you can see that person is smiling. um of whom may be the gunman, but again, that is something that they are still trying to make a connection on. what we have

all right. >> brynn gingras, thanks so much. let's discuss all of this with cnn chief law enforcement analyst john miller, former special agent at the atf in new york, john devito, and criminal defense attorney stacy schneider. john, to you first, bring us inside the investigation. what are your sources telling you? >> well, the match of the fingerprint which occurred yesterday, the match of the ballistics, which occurred today and john devito can tell you how that's done, because when he was the atf special agent in charge, he actually gave nypd direct access to the kind of technology they could do that with. but those two things pull a lot together because you've got a suspect and a gun in pennsylvania. now you've got that gun matched to shell casings found at the murder. you've got a suspect in jail in pennsylvania, and now his prints matched to prints found at the murder. so the whole idea of. is this your suspect? and how do you know? starts to close in on this technology. the third piece to follow will be dna and, john. >>

let's get right to cnn's brynn gingras. for all the latest here. good morning, brit. >> hey, john. good morning. yeah. so this was something that police were, you know, waiting for the evidence that they could find to tie mangione. they say directly to the crime scene here in manhattan. and it appears, according to them that they did so the police commissioner saying that they now know the ballistics of the gun that was found on mangione in pennsylvania matches the shell casings that were found at the crime scene last week when a the ceo of unitedhealthcare, brian thompson, was killed. they also say the fingerprints match of mangione to the water bottle and the kind bar that was left behind, if you remember, from the the getaway route of their suspect, their suspected killer. and this is a big deal if you also remember about those fingerprints when we were reporting they had partial fingerprints, but they didn't. they ran them in through all the systems and they couldn't find a match. well, now they say that is a match. they were able to sort of cross-reference that. so that was so

let's get to cnn's brynn gingras, who is with us here in new york monitoring all the developments. we talked to you a few minutes ago. what's the latest now? >> yeah, john, the latest now is that we're hearing it's possible again, there are no communications inside the courtroom. so we're trying to filter this through our crews that are all there. it's possible that that first hearing has concluded. and maybe the second hearing, the extradition hearing is going to begin. it was expected to begin around 9:00 this morning. so again, not 100% clear, but we're still trying to firm that down. what we do know is that he had first a hearing at 830 on those charges he faced in pennsylvania, which was a forgery charge, a gun charge. and then what would happen is the judge had to swap out so that new judge would take the bench, and he would have a hearing for that extradition hearing. now, of course, our sources telling kara scannell that he was planning to waive extradition. that means that he will be brought back here to new york. so once that hearing is concluded, then mangione our unders

cnn's brynn gingras and john miller joining me now from new york.an, i'm going to start with you. what do we know? >> yeah. so we know right now, dana, that there is someone that is being questioned by investigators, right now in altoona, pennsylvania. this person is 26 years old. according to sources telling john miller. we've learned that they actually got a tip from someone at a nearby mcdonald's in that area who said, hey this guy looks like the person that's in all those photos that have been circulating. and that's how he was brought in for further questioning and in doing so, according to sources telling john that that they found a lot of evidence that could point in the right investigation for authorities at this point. they found a gun that resembles the one that was used in the murder last wednesday. they found a suppressor, which is basically another word for a silencer. it muffles the sound of a gunshot. we know that was also used in the killing on wednesday. and they found a number of fake ids with this person. one of those, according t

let's get straight to cnn's brynn gingras. and brian, what more do we know about these search warrants? yeah, right. >> so this is all part of the investigative process. >> we know from sources telling myself that at least three search warrants have been conducted in new york as part of this investigation on evidence, we have already learned about. you just mentioned at least one of those pieces of evidence, which is that burner phone, which, again, authorities found on that getaway route where they say the suspected killer went as they left the scene of that hilton hotel in midtown manhattan. as you just said, it's unclear if they were actually able to get into the phone or what sort of information they were able to glean from that burner phone. we already have reported they got a partial fingerprint, which yesterday the nypd commissioner said they were able to trace back to luigi mangione fingerprint that they took there in pennsylvania. another search warrant was conducted on a backpack. if you remember, that backpack was f

brynn gingras, thanks so much. joining us now, former fbi deputy director andrew mccabe. andrew, the suspected gunman has now been on the run since just after 6:45 a.m. this morning. he's believed to have used a silencer. what is the information we have? what does it tell you about the sophistication of this attack well jake, the details and nuances of this attack are extraordinary. >> they do betray an astounding level of preplanning, of organization and i should also say, cool headedness and all of those things together would point towards a very competent assassin and potentially even someone who does this for hire. we know first by his use of the weapon, he's carrying a nine millimeter semiautomatic pistol. it appears to be equipped with some sort of silencer or suppression device. these are not things that you see on everyday ordinary homicides. drive by shootings, things like that. this is a this is a pretty advanced piece of equipment. he uses it with great precision. his timing is impeccable. he waits behind the suv until the target walks past. he steps out behind

first, though, brynn gingras is out front., bryn, you're learning tonight that mangione could be moved to new york much earlier than expected. this is a real change. what happened? >> yeah. erin, i mean, the whole process of extraditing luigi mangione back to new york could really be fast tracked. this is all coming from the manhattan district attorney, alvin bragg, who spoke publicly today and said that he may now waive extradition. it's unclear exactly when that decision could be made or if it's already been made. but certainly what we're understanding is, according to bragg, that if mangione does waive his extradition the soonest he could go in front of a pennsylvania judge would be on tuesday. so we're certainly going to be looking out for that. but let's hear more from bragg himself until that time, we're going to continue to press forward on parallel paths, and we'll be ready. >> whether he is going to waive extradition or whether he's going to contest extradition and those alternate paths, of course, are going to be the

joining us now for this breaking news is brynn gingras. what are you learning? >> yeah, pam, we're just getting this into our newsroom from sources telling john miller and myself that there is a man being questioned right now in altoona, pennsylvania. that person is in police custody right now undergoing that questioning by law enforcement officials. and what we've learned is pretty alarming. basically sources are telling us that working off of a tip, police stopped someone who was traveling by bus, and they were able to recover a suppressor a number of fake ids, according to one official, and also that same person is believed to also have fit the same description as all of those pictures that have been dispersed. of course, out into everywhere for people to help identify with this person. so this is a lot of information coming in right now. this is just breaking again, police questioning someone, a person in custody right now believed to be possibly a suspect in this case, responsible for that deadly shooting last wednesday and we're learning a little bit more

brynn gingras. >> and in this video right here posted to social media, you can actually see the plane descending to the ground and what appears to be the moment of impact. a russian aviation watchdog says preliminary information suggests the pilot tried to make an emergency landing after a bird strike. last hour i spoke with cnn transportation analyst mary schiavo about the new developments. here's some of that conversation. >> well, what i'm seeing is it has to be more than a bird strike because the plane did not have what's called pitch control. in other words, how many degrees up or down the nose is, how much is the nose pointed up or how much is it pointed down. so it obviously had some damage to the pitch control, which could be from the trim system, which, you know, helps the pilot keep the nose in the right place, up or down, or the elevator, which is in the back of the plane. so there had to be something additional going on. also, there's unconfirmed reports that the pilot had done what's called squawking. and others. you put your radio, you put your equipment on, and it sends

i want to go to brynn gingras now. in a moment, we're going to be joined by a close friend of luigi mangione and bryn. you have been diving into the suspect's background. what have you learned about him yeah erin, this was no career criminal. >> as we've been learning from law enforcement, there were no prior arrests of him. >> they really weren't. he wasn't really on their radar. and what we've learned is that mangione really went to some of the best schools in this country, comes from a prominent family in maryland. as far as those schools we know, he graduated in 2016 from gilman high school, which is an all boys school. he was valedictorian of his class, where he gave his speech at his graduation. then he went on to university of pennsylvania, where he also graduated with a bachelor's and master's degree, computer science, as well as mathematics. extremely smart, told his newspaper there that he wanted to learn how to code because he wanted to make his own video games. extremely smart individual. as far as the fami

brynn gingras begins our coverage out front live in new york. and bryn, what is the latest you're learning? >> yeah. erin. the gun, the fingerprints, the fake id, all the surveillance video. all is going to be used by police and prosecutors to tie mangione to the crime. but first, it's going to be crucial for them as well to get mangione back here in new york as he continues to fight extradition. while luigi mangione sits alone in a pennsylvania jail cell. police say they now have crucial connections between the 26 year old and the manhattan crime scene. >> first, we got the gun in question back from pennsylvania. it's now at the nypd crime lab. we were able to match that gun to the three shell casings that we found in midtown. at the scene of the homicide. >> the nypd commissioner also confirming what cnn first reported. mangione fingerprints match evidence found where unitedhealth ceo brian thompson was gunned down a week ago. >> we're also able at our crime lab to match the person of interest fingerprints with fingerprints that we found on bo

we're seeing some of these pictures right now joining us is cnn's brynn gingras, who has been breaking news on this story. and former senior fbi official catherine schweizer to kick it off with you. tell us more about the search of the hostel yeah, right. >> pamela. so sources are telling me and john miller that they believe that this gunman stayed there for a couple of days and some interesting things coming out of the search of that hospital as you mentioned, hostel, as you mentioned, that was on the upper west or is on the upper west side. they say that while the gunman stayed there, he actually wore a mask, as we have seen in all of those images. you just showed your viewers at the starbucks here at the scene of where the killing actually happened. he wore that mask for most of the time at that hostel, even while staying with a couple of other people what we learned, though, either at the check in process or the checkout process police were able to get an image of this person without the mask on however, a hood is up and so they're trying to determine if it's a good enough image wh

cnn's brynn gingras has much more on everything that came out overnight. brian, what more are you learning about this suspect? >> yeah, i mean even friends and family members at this point are wondering what happened here. >> i mean, this is a person luigi mangione who grew up extremely privileged, went to some of the best schools in this country comes from a very prominent maryland family. and if you look at his social media footprint, we really found someone who loved to travel, loved to hang out with friends, was most recently living in hawaii in a co-living space and was head of the book club there. loved to hike, but then about, you know this summer it starts to sort of go away. we see you know, messages where mangione is tagged, where people are worried about him wondering sort of where he went that his family was worried someone actually commented, you know, are you going to honor your rsvp to my wedding? so it does seem that he sort of trailed off. the big question is what happened? right. that is what investigators are trying to answer at this poi
