brenda buckner has more. >> reporter: last year, teen job seekers survived the weakest summer job market in decades. data from the bureau of labor statistics shows that, from may through july, employment for teens was down more than 17% from 2009. but this year, outplacement firm challenger, gray and christmas says the hiring climate is looking up. ceo john challenger. >> teens should be more optimistic that last year was at the bottom and we're coming out of that now this summer. >> reporter: for the many still hoping to land position, it is not too late. a lot of teen jobs are filled right on the spot and challenger says nothing beats actually walking into a business, introducing yourself to the manage are and asking about job opportunities. >> go to places, meet the boss, tell them or her that you are reliable, you'll be on time, that you get along well with others, that you want the job. >> >> reporter: searching for jobs where others are not and looking for odd jobs at off hours should give you an advantage. >> working outside in jobs of heavy labor, being open to working at odd hou
