of the press, noting that newspapers -- for having too much, grant for wanting to fight too much, buell for wanting to fight too little, and the governments for removing fuel for wanting to fight too little. the sacramento daily union qualified its announcement of the surrender of vicksburg on 4 july, 1863 with the wonderful statement, "the news is so good that we must indulge in a little skepticism until we receive a confirmation." which brings me to the whole question of accuracy and inaccuracy in the papers. the texas papers were by far the worst because they were isolated from both sides. at the beginning of the war, the papers were more prone to speculate enthusiastically. but sometimes, they were very prescient. one reported that arms are scarce in new orleans this turned out to be quite a coup. "the daily nebraskan" correctly reported federal strength in may 1861, but when the early campaigns began, then came the real challenge. the early 1862 campaigns in virginia are incredibly confusing, with three major events overlapping. this was truly a case of the fog of war. but sometime
