(roll call). we have a quorum. next item is presidents announcement. >> welcome to the building inspection commission for december 18, 2019. happy holidays. i am vice president filling in for president mccarthy who is away dealing with a family matter. i spoke to him this morning, and as i will get to later, this is the last meeting for many of us, and he has some -- he asked me to pass along greetings, and i will when i get to that matter. i would like to thank the department staff who have been and still are attending the california building officials training classes this week. every year our staff members almost all of them are required to take classes and be up to speed on current code and issues in the building industry, and our staff attends these trainings at least once a year to refresh and enhance technical skills to continue to provide excellent customer service. everyone in the city benefits from these continuing

you do include the building inspection commission in here and building inspection is usually just buildingpermits so i'm trying to think of what discretionary entitlement comes in front of the building inspection commission. did you get any feedback on that from the folks you consulted? >> we talked with folks at the planning department to dig into all of the mechanics of this new co section. for the reasons that department and that commission handles the vast majority of land use matter as defined. i can tell you what we found is that 1.127 is not perfect. it does not match up perfectly with how land use matterser dealt with in the city. what the regs endeavor to do is faithfully carry out that code section. warts and all. you make a valid point about the building inspection commission but we thought to include the departments included in the code so to not artificially limit it and not impose the elementtation that was not imposed by the voters. looking at this further highlights in my mind i would like to at least put in, i do not have a financial interest in the land use matter as defi

there is the building inspection commission which oversees the department of building inspection. and this would be a great place to have those concerns raised if they haven't already been raised. and also it's unprecedented for this part to make staffing calls. so i think, again, if there are concerns about who should be handling this, director tom, building inspection commission, that's the appropriate venue to direct that if that hasn't already been done, i would encourage them to do that. i think we can find a way forward through this and look forward to the board's assistance in that. in terms of variance and variance timing, it would be several months. i just quoted to them six to eight months. i don't know what the current backlog is of variance applications since i'm not handling that directly anymore. but we can look into it and get that done as soon as possible. there's no preferential treatment, we can't take it out of order, but we will do our best with that. they could also revise the project so they no longer need a variance by deleting that corner. they can't recons
