steve bullock said that in and of itself is playing into donald trump's hands. the one person who wasn't made mention of, the front runner right now, vice president joe biden. i had the chance to interview steve bullock and i asked him why that didn't come up. take a look at that exchange. i noticed that one of the people who was not name last night was the front runner, joe biden. was it a missed opportunity not to take aim at the front runner, biden? >> well, i think that from the perspective of it's still early in this race and people will go up and down in so many different ways, but i think talking about things that are what i think are plans that are written for press releases. trillions and trillions of dollars spending reflects the washington reality. >> reporter: bullock, there was a lot of pressure on him last night because he didn't qualify for the first debate. for a whole host of candidates on that stage last night was make or break, not clear that those who didn't really have standout moment will qualify for the next debates in the fall. again, wha

i want to ask about bullock in a second. but our friend angela rye had a bar, if you will, that she would judge last night as a great debate if she could remember three names on that stage come this morning. so with that being the standard, other than elizabeth warren and bernie sanders, was it a great debate? what three names are standing out? uh-oh, not a great debate. >> i think that bullock speaks for a large swath of the party. and it's more than the twitter folk want to give it credit for. there are a lot of voters in the democratic atmosphere that think like steve bullock. and he was able to introduce himself as someone who's won before in a trump state. i think marianne williamson is a name people are popping up for good, better, worse. i don't think she's going to win a primary. but she did add something and gave what i believe to be the most comprehensive, robust answer on the issue of race. that's only two. i know ryan, i know hick. i can't remember who else was on stage last night. >> there's all you need to know

steve bullock making his first debate, the governor of montana. says, no, i won a trump state. you can't sell that. john delaney says no. john hickenlooper says no. pete buttigieg to a degree says no. amy klobuchar, the senator, says no. so they are going to have this moderate incoming. most of these moderates are in trouble. most of the moderates are struggling in the race. which one or what do we expect and which one are we looking to to be most aaggressive? >> i don't know about aggressive, but the path for a moderate in this race isn't just about attacking the folks further to their left. it's hard to see somebody really taking off in this primary with a message of we can't have nice things, we can't go that big. it can't just be a message of caution. i think pete buttigieg is instructive. he's running on a more ideologically moderate message. but there's a vision there about generational change that democrats find interesting. i think it's part of why steve bullock is really a potentially interesting figure on the debate because his profile as the governor -- the sitting g
