the two green party mps are the first trans women to win seats in germany's parliament, the bundestag>> it was an incredibly intoxicating feeling. >> i was ecstatic on the day of the election. reporter: one of them will move from north rhine-westphalia to the capital of berlin. at just 27, she is one of the youngest members of parliament. >> when i went into politics over 10 years ago, there were no trans role models. i only knew about trans people from a tabloid-driven with sensational points of view where it was only about operations. reporter: tessa has been politically active for over 20 years. originally from bavaria in southern germany, her main focus will be on your political issues and climate protection. >> in the bundestag, i would also like to build on the political work i have been doing in the bavarian state parliament, for example, helping to shape the greens' transport policy. reporter: their presence in the bundestag as trans women is important to them both. >> there are still so many discriminatory laws. for example, there is the transsexual law in germany, which is p

i've been elected to the bundestag for the first time. grueling and intense campaign is behind me. it's a matter of actually becoming a proper and -- proper mp. reporter: he is excited but his party is in crisis. it had its worst ever result in september's election. it is not preparing for -- opposition after 16 years of leading the country with angela merkel. >> that is our job, not to be fundamentally in opposition but to take a constructive approach to ensure this country is well governed. reporter: the liberal fdp party knows opposition to well. the 29-year-old first time mp is excited. >> it is of course exciting to go into the plan every hole for the first time now is a member of parliament. but i also feel a great responsibility and i am also honored to be here. reporter: after four years in opposition, the liberals are currently in coalition talks to join the next government. many young people voted for them, and that is particularly important for her. >> i want to work to ensure the perspective of young people has an impact here.

reporter: not even 1% of lawmakers in the german bundestag are under 30.ers, too, are mostly older, and vote more often for conservative parties. in erfurt, where pierre lives, one in five residents is over 65, and the number is rising. for pierre, politics doesn't focus enough on what young people need. this became especially clear during the pandemic, when many of his fellow students were suddenly dealing with drastic problems. pierre: i lost my part-time job. so did lots of others, for example, in the restaurant business. lots of students had to interrupt their studies when they lost their job. they put their degree on hold or even dropped out. it doesn't get talked about much. reporter: for the past 18 months, pierre has spent a lot of time at home in his shared flat. university was mostly online, and his band couldn't perform. he had to settle for guitar practice in his room. pierre says that now, ahead of the federal election, many of his friends are disappointed with politicians and parties. pierre: in my generation, i see a lot of disenchantment wi
