tory burch. >> it's a very good one. thank you so much for joining us., you started a foundation. what's the new goal about in terms of making this campaign to embrace ambition? >> you know, i think it's such a harmful stereotype. we need for once and all get rid of it. when a man is ambitious, it's celebrated and when a woman is ambitious it's distasteful. >> she's a bitch and ruthless. >> uncomfortable it's in beginning -- >> i'm guilty of it. the first article ever written on me. someone called me up and said, i loved the article and you shied away from the words ambition. 13 years later i realize it's true. it's not something that i was proud of back then but i want other people to have the confidence to embrace their goals. it doesn't have to be in the workforce. it can be being a mom. >> tilt is a terrible thing but somebody's got to do it. what are you hopingom >> i think women and men. it's so important to have men part of this conversation. equal rights to be a given. equal pay should be a given. it's not a favor. half of the population, it's es

burch professor of economics and law at university of california at berkeley. he's the director of the burch center research associate of the nber, in the tax world he's very well known as the former president of the national tax association, and he was deputy chief of staff at the joint committee on taxation in '92 when they did the landmark study of corporate tax incidents. beyond the economic -- beyond the narrow confines of the tax world, he is a leader in our profession in numerous honors and awards, the editor of not just one, but of two top journalists in economics. on top of that, i've been the great beneficiary, co-author with alan on many occasions. today, he's going to talk about the destination-based cash flow tax, a proposal for which he's done much of the heavy lifting and main proponent and we can all benefit from his explanation of how it works, why it is a good idea, and what some of the issues are and how they can be addressed. so alan, i'll turn it over to you. thank you. we are excited on the tory burch program.we talk about this and credible campaign, that was very exciting. i felt empowered just watching it. i want to ask you how you embrace ambition or did not when you were younger because, in preparing for this interview, i read about how you got into fashion, and it seems to me that you set your sights on a career in fashion after graduating from the university of pennsylvania with a degree in art history. you came to new york and things kind of fell into place. can you tell us about the early days of your career? tory: i think i was raised in a family that i did not know gender would have anything to do with it. i grew up with three brothers and my parents really taught us that we can do anything if we worked hard, so that was the general feeling. studied artnn and history. i got a job sorted randomly in fashion. i sent a resume to an interesting designer who looked like rasputin. he said i could start but i had to start the week after i graduate from penn. that is how i got into fashio

the woman behind the move fashion designer tori burch is live. >> we want to lean in together. >> owndreams. >> no judgment. >> take the pledge. >> embrace ambition. >> will you? >> shannon: today is international women's day and to to to tory burch is urging women to pursue ambition. let's talk about the word ambition. you want to take it away. >> when men are ambitious it's celebrated and when a woman is ambitious is crass. i shied away from the word ambitious so i am guilty. >> shannon: you want to make sure people make their intentions known and be proud of what they want accomplish. women have come a long way. >> they've come a long way. we need to come a much longer way. i think confidence is part of it. i think women have trouble asking for a raise. women have trouble promoting themselves. i think that's not in arrogance but it's important to know your worth. >> shannon: i think there's some things not to be stereotypical but the way things have progressed men are just sometimes better connected when you look at ceo's you'll have less of a base at that level. you're working on

it's interesting to hear a burch of house republicans after the last eight years talk about how horrible are. >> looking in totality of the last two weeks, since the tweet, this is largely a problem created by president trump and fueled by president trump, not created and fueled by leaks. the situation was made worse or more complicated today by confirming on the record, straight from the horse's mouth, what all of us believe was happening anyway both in terms of what president obama didn't do and what might be going on in the investigative world. having it on the record changes the game. but this is a situation that president trump's actions largely have fueled. everything that got us to the place of this hearing today, mr. -- director comey's testimony and everything that's followed. it's an opportunity strategically to shift for the white house, but it's not clear that they will. >> they should be taking mary katharine's advice and talking about neil gorsuch. >> they rarely do. >> clarissa, as someone who has spent months in russia. i can't think, as somebody who likes to meddle in el
