a general named john burgoyne. john burgoyne was a good general who had fought in portugal. he was a playwright. a popular playwright. and he came up with a plan to split the 13 colonies. he would come down from quÉbec, this was the main british base in this part of canada. he would go up the st. lawrence and then come down -- here is lake champlain. but you can the map sail down lake champlain. and this looks very tempting on a map. because you have a waterway that can take you all this way down to new york. but the problem is, once you get out of lake champlain, there you are in upstate new york. and john burgoyne would discover problems with that. the other parts of the plant, a lieutenant colonel named barrymore saint leger -- the plan was to go down the st. lawrence into ontario and land at fort oswego, and come down the mohawk river towards albany. comic here in new york, would go up the hudson. here in newhowe, york, would go up the hudson. and you would have a three-way convergence. new england would be here and the rest of the rebellious colonies would be here and b

brookhiser: john burgoyne was following burgoyne's plan. and the only problem is that their plans were somewhat different. ms. gregory: there was no communicating. mr. brookhiser: well, howe is some because he is leaving 7000 men here which is no chop liver and they do have orders to assist. but howe is taking most of his men and going to philadelphia. let us pledge our attention and look first at what howe does. if he is not going overland, he has to lose -- he has to use the water. he could come up the delaware river. what he does instead is he sets forth from new york and of course, we lose touch with him. no drones. he is off at sea. where is he going? we only realize where he is going when he is spotted here. coming in here. then it is obvious. he must be going here which is in fact what he does. he sails all the way up the chesapeake bay and there is a little spot here that is a tiny river. the elk river. this is not many miles from philadelphia. it is pretty easy country. and not that far. this is his plan. he will land here and atta

time was very much against burgoyne. his army was isolated and he was losing men every day through attrition, skirmishes, disease, attrition, and his food supplies were running lower and lower every day. general burgoyne came to decide he had to put things into his own hands. he devised a plan. on the seventh of october, he would move out with 1500 officers and men. the forces would move towards horatio gates's camp. thatal burgoyne determined to view the to try american point of defense for himself. upon viewing the american lines of defense from a distance, he would make the determination whether or not to attack the next day. if the american lines looked to be too strong, he would go back to his camp, wait a few more days, hope for more time to pass in which clinton might make more of a showing of himself against gates's rear, and then if nothing happened, begin his retreat toward canada from whence he came. when general burgoyne moved out with his probing force of 1500 officers and men, they came upon a wheat field,

burgoyne's surrender was a major factor in bringing about the french alliance. we had envoys and ambassadors to france who are trying to get the french to side with the united states. they were not biting as far as an official alliance. our envoys had that peace that they needed to bring about the french to convince them to not only recognize the united states as a real legitimate country, but to become our formal allies. the french signed a treaty of alliance and a treaty of amity and commerce. it's with this french alliance we eventually won the revolutionary war. the last major battle engagement occurred in yorktown, virginia in 1781. most of the personnel were actually french. we would not have won yorktown without french naval army assistance. we would not have had french assistance without saratoga. our cities tour staff recently traveled to search of the springs, new york to learn about its rich history. learn more about saratoga springs and other stops on our tour at www.c-span.org/ci tiestour. you're watching american history tv. all weekend, every week
