sally downing there from burlingame. you can see the damage inside of her house when that tree came crashing down just yesterday. thank you, sally. >>> let's move on now. another headline this evening. it's the first of its kind ban in the country. and it's happening right here in the bay area. air quality regulators just voted to end the use of gas-powered water heaters and furnaces by 2027. the rules are meant to cut down on air pollution. according to the regulators, the heaters and furnaces create nitrogen oxide which can create smog, and right now they create more pollution than all of the cars on the road in the entire bay area. so what does this exactly mean for you? in a phase-out, it's a phase-out starting in 2027. if you have a gas-powered water heater and it breaks down and it can't be fixed, you'll have to replace it with an electric-powered one instead. and then in 2029, the same thing happens for gas-powered furnaces. one important note, the ban does not apply to gas-powered stoves. they produce less nitro

it will be from one end of burlingame to the other. including parts of san mateo. it will be a complete renewal of the roadway, including drainage and sidewalks. frankly our sidewalks are impossible to people with strollers or wheelchairs, it's not acceptable and we need to do something about it. we have worked very closely with caltrans to make sure that as we redesign and refresh el camino, that we will be able to have a tree-lined street. it just won't be these trees. it will be a new set of trees. kristen: has it been determined yet what types of trees will replace them? >> we are still discussing that. this is a historic grove, on the national historic places of registered -- national register of historic places since 2012. we are looking potentially at a species of eucalyptus that is much more narrow and does not get quite as tall and does not have the same risks as the blue gum does. kristen: where are you in the planning process? when do you anticipate this starting, what is the timeline here? >> have to say that we have been at this for five years with cal

cloud forest dan kerman is live in burlingame tonight with the latest on that. dan. >> well, you know, we're here on el camino, real and anybody who's driven along here knows just how many eucalyptus trees are here. well, in the course of an hour yesterday, 3 of them came down, knocking down traffic signals and power lines hitting a couple of homes, damaging several cars, destroying another car. this all happened again around noon yesterday in the course of an hour. 2 others came down. residents we talked to said it a very frightening situation. one was on his front lawn talking to fire officials when this 3rd tree came down. it's kind of like 20 minutes in between trees. everybody thought that they had a breather and we're breathing a sigh of relief that they had survived it and then suddenly another tree would come down. the big concern now is that if we do get another round of storms, what about all these other eucalyptus trees in the area, caltrans, which is responsible for el camino, real says that they normally check these trees. and in fact, many of them

reporting from burlingame. jana katsuyama ktvu, fox two news. water managers say that reservoirs in the east bay are now at 87% capacity to tell the east bay times. that's the perfect level because it means there is room in the reservoirs for more rain and for snowmelt to come. the water agency says that customers should still keep water conservation in mind, given the extremes of drought and then a day luge of water in recent months. new details just released about drought conditions in california showed that for the first time, most of the bay area is completely out of a drought. take a look at your screen. we haven't seen the drought map look like this for a long time. as of right now, only 36% of the state has any part of moderate drought or worse, none of our state is in extreme drought anymore. governor gavin newsom is sending hundreds of brand new tiny homes to the city of san jose to house people who are homeless will be up to city leaders there to decide where to put those homes and will live in them. ktvu sally rasmus spoke with homele

just before noon we got to burlingame. here at el camino in cambridge a massive 60 foot tree could not withstand the gusty winds. a 40 foot branch came crashing down blocking lanes of traffic. utility lines got yanked down. city crew spent a long time rerouting traffic around the mess. things got a little tricky on southbound 280 between millbrae avenue and trousdale drive a high wind advisory was in effect for the area. drivers battled the elements it had to maneuver around the fallen eucalyptus tree. all debris forced cars to use the shoulder and traffic slowed to a crawl. it was one of two trees that toppled on a stretch of 280. here is another fallen tree that partially block of the offramp on trousdale drive. in san down. all the rain has saturated the ground. two different trees toppled. they blot a section of northbound el camino real. it happened across the treat -- the street from this doctors office. the back entrance tests and colors i care is blocked because the wind took down the awning. >> it was very loud. t
