good morning to you, laura, and here on the third day of the all-volunteer search being run out of burnett elementary here in morgan hill, we're getting a better sense of where the santa clara county sheriff's office stands in their investigation. we have spoken with sheriff lori smith. she tells us they're not ready to call this a stranger abduction, they're just not there yet. it's quite possible whoever took sierra lamar 13 days ago knew her or was acquainted with her. investigators do believe that this person is familiar with the area, the sheriff points out that 40% of people who abduct children live within a mile of that child's home. and they're also working with the theory that this was a crime of opportunity. in other words, the person didn't plan this abduction, they saw the 15-year-old and just made a snap decision to take her. >> it's impulsive. the less than 2% of the strangers that abduct children are registered sex offenders, but they do have criminal history. and so we're looking at parolees, probationers, people who have criminal records. >> reporter: the sheriff's office
