i'm erin burnett. tonight, the breaking news, showdown over the mueller report. the attorney general bill barr has put out today this, a two-page letter to congress. in it he promises to give something to the public by mid april, but he adds a quote. this is one of the operative lines we are preparing the report for release, making the redactions that are required. the emphasis of course is mine. but attorney general barr then spends six lines in here, the biggest chunk right in here, okay, listing possible areas of redactions including information that would induly infringe on the personal privacy and reputational interests of peripheral third parties. peripheral is quite a subjective word isn't it? redaction can be a hugely subjective enterprise a way to hide important information the country has a right to know or utterly innocuous. which is it going to be? redactions are not flying with the powerful chairman, jerry nadler. he fired back be his own letter writing in part, quote, as i informed the attorney general earlier this week, congressdact. emphasis again

i'm erin burnett in for don lemon once again. paul manafort, president trump's former campaign chairman, gets a stunning sentence tonight from a judge in virginia. that is the case over seeing his trial for bank fraud. tax evasion. manafort got 47 months in prison. the reason i use the word stunning which i recognize we can over use in television. is it was astonishing. significantly less than the 19 to 24 years sought by prosecutors. sentencing guidelines from robert mueller's office. now, the judge called that recommendation excessive. more than excessive, we are talking about 47 months versus up 24 years. totally different stratosphere. manafort is accused of witness tampering and additional crimes in his other court case. he's going to be sentenced on that next week. but the judge today said manafort lived an otherwise blameless life. he's giving manafort credit for the nine months he already spent in jail in solitary confinement for most of that. meaning when it's all said and done it's not 37 months. it's 47 months less tha
