senator burr: we cannot comment on that. that conversation took place supposedly between director comey and president. our job is to make sure we follow the intelligence where it leads and hopefully at some point we will be able to make a determination as to whether that statement is accurate. senator warner: i would add that i would refer you to mr. mccabe's comments about what traditional procedure would be. that would not be something in a traditional case would be discussed. said that this meeting was to set up the rules of the road. how would you describe with those are, and a director comey come up at all? senator burr: he did not come up. he was not the subject of it. though there are details to work out, there was acknowledgment and understanding of the need for us to be able to pick up the phone, share with them what we were likely to do, and could get immediate clearance on whether that interfered in any way shape or form with their investigation. senator warner: the other thing i would clarify on that is, i raise

burr: i would like to call the hearing to order. i would like to thank all of our witnesses for being here today, especially mr. mccabe, for being here on such short notice. since 1985, we have heard about the russian security threat facing the united states of america. i understand many people tuning in today are hoping we will focus solely on the investigation into russian interference in our election. let me be up front. the purpose of today's hearing is to review and highlight, to the extent possible, the range .f threats facing the nation the national security threat picture has evolved significantly. what used to be a collection of mostly physical and state aced national concerns, -- state-based national security concerns has been replaced by something altogether different. today, our traditional focus on countries like north korea and iran is complicated by strategic nonstate actors in the cyber arena and terrorists who can use the internet to inspire violence and fear in the homeland all without leaving middleafe havens in t

burr: thank you, general. admiral rogers, every aspect of our daily lives continues to become part of a traceable, trackable interaction in the environment, now known as the internet of things. in addition, artificial intelligence has increasingly enabled technology to become autonomous. what is the ic's current assessment of the ever-changing capabilities of the internet of things and what it presents? adm rogers: it represents an opportunity but from a defense perspective, it represents great concern. where the ability to harness literally millions of devices that are built for very simple day to day activities can suddenly be tied together and focused and oriented to achieve a specific outcome. we have seen this with denial of service attempts. a couple of significant companies on the east coast of the united states in the last year. this will be a trend in the future as part of the discussions we are having in the private sector with this being a problem that is common to both of us. how can we work togeth

mcconnell: senator burr and senator warner are handling that investigation and will decide what they need. in the meantime, the rest of us not directly involved in that, i think we need to concentrate on what comes next. we need to have a great choice for you director. i anticipate the president will do that and move on. kevin: how has all of this drama has described influence your ability to get ahead with health care reform? so many republicans across the country elected a republican controlled congress to fix health care. sen. mcconnell: there were tense meetings in the senate. the bill finally passed the house. it wasn't easy in the house and it won't be any easier in the senate. week we are intense discussions with virtually all the members of the senate. my goal is to get to at least 50 votes to repeal and replace obamacare and those discussions are underway. kevin: do you have a timeline on that? sen. mcconnell: well, we can't take forever. the private health insurance market is collapsing. insurers are pulling out of markets. i don't think that we have forever to address this
