>> yeah, the lightning, the rain, hopefully no mike bursts down there. we had probably three in the area. live look outside, things settling down locally. there's a lot of damage to be looked at in prince georges county, many other areas, but definitely concentrated around the bladensburg area. and we want to talk just a little bit more about what we're seeing on radar tonight, especially here at the beaches. here comes the cold front. got a couple of showers here, more activity down to our south. give this a little longer and it's going to be out of there. watch the lightning. it will be a much-improved saturday at the beaches. just another 30 minutes or so to go out there, as cooler air is coming. this is the leading edge of it. back to the micro burst aspect of the damage, because you'll see the pictures tomorrow out of bladensburg. a microburst is straight line wind damage essentially. cold air comes out from the inside of the storm like a brick. it hits the ground and it stands out, compress and really speeds up, so you get winds of 60, 70, even 80

what exactly is a micro burst? it's a little different from a tornado in that first of all, it's not rotating. these storms tonight, and there were multiple micro bursts. it's from cold air descending from the storm. it comes down like a brick. you'll definitely see it descending and also kind of heating, spinning up as it continues to hit the ground and roll on down. as it does that, those winds can compress and really speed up. we know we had winds gusting over 60 miles an hour in the vicinity of bladensburg, silver spring, national arboretum. in the micro burst, winds can get to 80 miles per hour or more. that's why we saw all that very significant damage in bladensburg and also what happened up in frederic. and there was another micro burst likely in the hartford county area. they also look at the damage caused by the micro burst and it sort of fans out, taking down everything in its path, very strong. what you don't get is the rotation that you would see with a thunderstorm. but you get incredibly significant
