that justice department investigation is running parallel to the local investigation headed by st. louisounty and while holder emphasized the importance of trust between law enrs fomt and public, the fracturing of that trust was evident in the local grand jury, expected to begin hearing evidence in the case today. a crowd of several dozen protesters gathered outside the courthouse in clayton yelling the now familiar chant of hands up, don't shoot. this all comes amid more calls for st. louis county prosecutor bob mccullough to recuse himself from the case. critics say his ties to police, numerous family members served in the police department, that those ties hamper his objectivity. his father a police officer was killed in the line of duty by a black suspect. but in a local interview today, mccullough said that all of that, the family backgrounds and father's case only makes him more compassionate towards those who have lost a loved one to violence. >> i know the pain of that and the fact he was a police officer killed in the line of duty had nothing to do with any of that. i know the p

by cop. i didn't describe it that way, but i have heard that used, yes. >> as the st. louis city police chief speaking today after yet another young african-american man was killed by police in the st. louis area today. in this shooting today, again, it was two officers from the st. louis city police department, and the young man who they killed was said by police to be armed with a knife in this snen incident. police also said they recovered a knife at the scene. now, local residents told reporters today that the young man who was killed was well known in the community, but, again, he has no been formally identified. after the police chief spoke today, which sort of ended up being as much to local residents as it was to the press, local st. louis alderman antonio french who you'll recognize here in the foreground, he spoke to the same crowd that the police chief had just spoken to, and the crowd did seem to be at least somewhat agitated and upset about the chief's announcement about the killing. antonio french basically tried to talk the crowd down. this was a remarkable sc

right. >> the fbi announced that it was opening a parallel investigation to the one being done by st. louis county police over allegations of civil rights abuses. and brown's parents spoke out in their first president conference. >> that's my first born son. anybody that know me knew i. [ inaudible ] my son. i just wish i could have been there to help him. >> he's a good boy. he didn't deserve none of that. none of it. we need justice for our son. >> they asked protesters to remain peaceful. but as night fell, police launched a harsh crack down. heavily armored vehicles and riot police used tear gas to disperse the crowds. looters took advantage of the unrest. on tuesday, officials announced that they would not release the name of the officer involved in the shooting after initially vowing to reveal his identity. that angered protesters further. [ inaudible ] >> are outraged is when you keep pushing people down. [ inaudible ] >> prominent civil rights activist, the referent al sharpton joined the demonstrations. and on this day the crack down extended to the sky. a no-fly zone was issued 3,

the shooting and killing of an unarmed teenager by a police officer in the st. louisrb of ferguson, missouri. this was supposed to be a peaceful rally but it turned violent as some people hijacked the moment by looting and by creating chaos. police say they were fired upon, as was their helicopter. 32 people were arrested. the mayor has urged calm. and the police chief says the fbi has also been asked to investigate investigate. i'm joined by cnn legal analyst sunny hostin and criminal defense attorney midwin charles. and our law enforcement analyst mike brooks. mike, there is a big discrepancy on what happened that led to all of this. an incident involving michael brown. witnesses say he had his hands up and he was shot, one even said execution style. the police officers say it wasn't as simple as that. there was actually an altercation that began. i want to get from you as a law enforcement analyst what is your protocol when it comes to discharging your weapon if you don't know if someone is armed? >> if that officer believed another officer or a citizen was in immi
