(laughs) captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> pelley: good evening. as of today we are down to the final four weeks of the presidential campaign. the focus is narrowing, not just to the nine battleground states but to one in particular-- ohio, which could tip the balance on election night. first the big picture. nationally, the latest gallup poll shows mitt romney leading president obama 49% to 47%. that spread is within the margin of error, so it's essentially a tie. in ohio, new polling today shows this: pollster a.r.g. has romney up by one point, 48% to 47%. but a cnn poll has the president up by four, 51% to 47%. either way, it's an improvement for romney who was falling well behind in ohio until last week's debate. both candidates were in ohio today where this is the last day to register to vote. our campaign 2012 correspondents reason there, too, and we'll go to nancy cordes with t

byron, thoughts about the debate tonight?well, i think there is a two ways to judge this debate tonight. there is a debate on the substance you that might get if you read the transcript and who did the best on one subject i thought close to a tie. i thought paul ryan won on libya and taxes and i thought joe biden won on medicare and afghanistan. i think that is overshadowed by joe biden's demeanor. and democrats later said no. no. he was passionate and a happy warrior. and republicans said no. he was terribly rude. i think people goring to watch, view this debate through their own impregs of the vice president's demeanor. >> greta: amy, in looking at vice president biden, i wonder do you have a thought what the independent undecided thing? do you think they think this is a guy who is passionate and a warrior. and he's fighting for me. fighting for my ideals i really like him. or do you think he's a bully? sneering and not likeable? >> i think if you're an uncommitted voter tonight and you're not swayed by romney's performance

byron?s the kind of thing you learn about after the election when somebody makes a complaint and we find something out about it. the key this, and this happened in 2008, the obama campaign has more small donors than anybody ever in history. a lot of people use credit cards to make donations on the web, and they're under $200, the minimum amount you have to report the donation to the fec. the angle here is that they're getting -- they're not too careful about where those credit card donations come from. they don't check to make sure they're not in a foreign place. they use a more rigorous routine when you buy a t-shirt using a credit card from the website than yo right, do you agree? >> absolutely. >> greta: so is there anything that the campaign needs to worry about? does the romney campaign need to worry? >> the romney campaign has said over and over they're careful about this. they do some of this too. i've been at fundraisers they had overseas. they had a big one in london when he did the
