"the girl in the photograph" is e truetle of the book, th story of a native american child. the phone lines split up regionally -- caller: in southern utah like san juan county, at one time it had been gerrymandered to where native americans did not have any representation. judgea year or two ago, a decided that, yes, there has been gerrymandered everything was of put back into how it should be. now native americans do have representation. but, at the same time, the people down there did not like that. so, they had a referendum to change their style of government just because they got voted out. native americans are now in charge. there is hope in the future. that some of the services that deniedied them but not anybody else, denied them, will now happen. services, human services. water. to makest wanted that comment. even in the state of utah today, we're kind of discriminating against the native american. host: thank

it continues today with senator byron dorgan. the former north dakota senator. the book is "the girl in the photograph." good morning to you. i will show viewers the photograph of the girl. tell us who she is. senator dorgan: the book is entitled "the girl in the photograph." a girl named tamara, lived on an indian reservation. she suffered great tragedy early in her life at age two. she was in a foster home. she was beaten very severely at a drunken party. her arm, her nose, her leg were broken and she laid in a room with no medical attention. a horrific story. to tell you a little bit about how i came to write a book about it, she was featured in a news story about abuse of children at foster homes with a very large photograph in a newspaper about two years after this happened. and i went to the indian reservation when i read this story and raised a lot of hell with everybody. and i met with this girl and her grandfather. and we, you know, we visited. then i sent her a couple of christmas gifts. then her grandfather died and i lost track of her. i would always

joining me now is someone who also took that very oath we just showed, former senator byron dorgan. how are you? >> i'm great. is this a violation of the senator's duty? >> it's way out of bounds. the oath says to do justice according to the constitution. there's no justice in the seeing senator mcconnell say we're going to link up here with the attorneys on behalf of the defendant and we're going to coordinate everything with those attorneys. and when it's all said and done we're going to acquit the defendant. by the way, ari, let me make one other point that's so important. this defendant has confessed. we have a confession from this defendant. we know what he asked the president of ukraine. his chief of staff said yes, there was a quid pro quo, he confessed as well and said get over it. so, this is the most bizarre circumstance where we will have a trial and the majority leader, the potential jury foreman in a trial says i'm going to coordinate everything with the defendant. it's unbelievable. it's way out of bounds. >> how does that contrast with the trial that we mentioned you

senator who has direct experience on exactly how these trials work, byron dorgan.ty in clinton's trial. thank you for joining me. >> thanks ari. >> how will it work given this is something the senate decides as it goes? >> well, i don't think anyone really knows how this will work. there's much, much more rancid pa partisanship than was 20 yearsing a. not as if there wasn't partisanship then, but it's much different now. it's changed the institution of the united states senate. by the way, i think there will be a senate trial. but the speaker has sort of thrown a wrench into part of it because she is not sending over the impeachment documents at this point. and i wonder to myself what kind of leverage is she looking for. because, you know, mcconnell might say we don't want a trial anyway. on the other hand i think the president probably wants to be acquitted and probably believes he will be acquitted. so, how would you like to be impeached and then somehow that's all of it and you don't get the acquittal. he wants to go to the american people with an acquittal, i a
