byron york is here. >> good to be here. >> greta: okay.he budget, but his experience on the hill. how does that help or hurt the campaign? >> well, it gives him enormous knowledge of the -- one of the most important issues of the campaign, federal spending, getting federal spending under control and entitlements. and you know, when you are a young congressman, you come to capital hill, the way to get ahead is to pick an area and really specialize in it and thrrn better than anybody else does. paul ryan has done that with the budget. he is the undisputed leader, not just of the republicans, but all of the house of knowledge of the federal budget. >> greta: one thing i thought in choosing senator biden to be the vice-president is that what president obama was doing was finding someone who knew how it work the hill and get things done. we are now in -- we are in a lockdown on the hill. but to the extent that people know the ins and the outs, i would anticipate that that experience valid some value? >> this is not the same thing n. 2008, barac

[ inaudible ] ted cruz is a good candidate. that cats for his victory. >> bret: duehurst was backed by governor rick perry in texas and had support from the establishment. this was a change of tide in texas. >> it's critical to understand where the tea party exceeded. it's with the conservative base in state of texas. if duehurst had gotten over 50% of the vote initially there wouldn't have been a runoff. once there is a runoff and you have the fight of the voter pool reduced then it was contest among party activists. that is where the tea party is strong

and joining us now byron york and deputy washington bureau chief michael krouly.h ann romney. did she achieve that tonight? >> this is about finding deskmaind think she gave a terrific speech given the fact she hasn't done this after the nonbefore. she can talk about mitt romney on a personal level. i thought the room would be chris christie it and ended up being ann romney. she hit where weak spots are saying women, of course, go out, love mitt romney. there is no subtle ti in that speech. and this is something telling you a little bit about mitt romney. i thought she looked great and sounded like. there was a human element, i think still missing. >> her job was to convey confidence she feels in her husband and this man will not fail. if she were in an airplane and the pilot died of a heart attack her husband would find a way to land safely. i think chris christie did not live up to billing and it dawn ond me great chris christie moments are usually him in a spontaneous encounter with a jerk who is hassling him. and christie just destroys him. so i think that he

byron york, a fox news contributor. you jumped into the game yesterday.ortman, pawlenty, ryan and rubio. take the first one, rob portman is a senator from ohio. why do you think he would be a good pick, or do you? >> because you have to -- first of all i'm talking about who mitt romney might pick, i don't have a personal choice in this. but look at what mitt romney, how he operates, he's a very cautious man. he believes that the boss should be the boss, that is the president nominee will pick the direction of the campaign, the vice president will follow. and he is not looking for a flashy choice. so, rob portman fits all of those things very well, experience in the house, the senate, the executive branch, a very, very solid pick might help romney in ohio. romney doesn't win ohio he doesn't win the presidency. bill: 18 electoral votes in the buckeye state. tim pawlenty the former governor of minnesota does he fit the criteria you just laid out? >> that is kind of a ditto with portman. he's been a governor and that's a very big thing for mitt romney. critic

byron york is the chief political correspondent for the "washington examiner" and joins us now.is also a fox news contributor. byron, anything to take away from this lineup? some big stars. >> well, some were expected. john mccain was the party standard-bearer last time around. mike huckabee basically finished second to mccain in 2008. would have been a very strong candidate had he decided to run this time. what i think you will see from the parties is lot of emphasis with people like condoleezza rice. nikki haley the governor of south carolina, susana martinez, governor of new mexico, a black woman, a hispanic woman, indian-american woman. republican party has been sensitive that it is too old, too white, too boring. they want to say we're diverse too. they will put a number of their really fresh new faces out on display for this. heather: byron, how much of a difference does it really make when we're all the way down the homestretch with the conventions when it comes to putting speakers in place and you're trying to get those undecided votes, get those key demographics? >> wel

i'm joined now by byron york, chief political correspondent for the washington examiner and a fox news cover? >> pretty surprised. i think "newsweek" is trying to achieve some balance after publishing the mitt romney whimp story a two weeks ago that got a lot of attention. it was by a liberal writer who also wrote the story of the coming obama landslide, for the daily beast. this writer is a british historian and is part of the glamorous global elite, and among whom it's very fashionable to support obama. near is neil furniture us son writing an across the board indictment of obama and domestic and foreign policy and saying this guy has to go. martha: he points out in the story that he was a supporter of john mccain. he says when president obama what's elected i joined with so many people feeling that it was, you know, a huge milestone for the country, and the ground that had been traveled, in terms of electing an african-american president. but he goes onto talk about the unemployment rate, and education, and infrastructure and all of the promises that he says the obama administration

byron york, chief washington correspondent for the "washington examiner". what do you make of these numbers? >> good morning. first thing to say we're 72 hours into the romney-ryan ticket and it is too early to draw conclusions from it. people are just getting to know him. i think the results are fairly encouraging for the romney-ryan ticket. republicans like the choice. democrats don't like the choice. people in the middle are trying to figure it all out but seem to become a little more positive toward paul ryan. so i would say for the first 72 hours they think it is pretty encouraging. martha: all over the media this morning splashed all kinds of takes on these numbers. some saying they were weak. they show he compares with other people who didn't do that well as vice-presidential picks including palin and dick cheney and others. the romney camp is saying this is brand new information. a lot of people aren't even aware of paul ryan. don't know him yet. do you buy that argument? >> i do. most people don't pay attention. there are a number of people when yo
