c-span: who was? >> guest: who was the very conservative statesman of early 19th century who, as it happened, henry kissinger has written a book about, a very interesting book about metternich. so there i was, attracted to this very conservative statesman, and if i again look back upon it i find that some of my first writings were on edmund burke, for example, who was a great 18th century -- he called himself at the time a whig, but from our perspective he's very much in the conservative tradition. lord acton himself was in one sense a great liberal, but he had a very strong conservative streak in him. he was a very pious catholic, for example, and therefore a great believer in tradition, in institutions, in authority and so on, so that i think that throughout my life i've had this kind of predilection even in my most radical period. c-span: in the front of this book there's a list of some 13 books that you've written plus this book, four that you've edited and nine that you've actually written. >> gu

c-span: do you speak a lot? >> guest: yes, i do. c-span: do you tell stories? >> guest: i tell stories; i tell anecdotes; i recycle stories. c-span: what's the one that gets the biggest laugh every time? >> guest: i guess telling the story about when i was a young working mother and had two kids of my own and i was working at the white house. you tend to forget a lot of things because the white house comes first, so i forgot and left our big, fat dachshund at the vet about two weeks, and suddenly i kept getting insistent phone calls from the kids to go get mitzi. i went by and got mitzi. they handed me this little, tiny dachshund and i felt so guilty. i just thought, she's been love-starved. i put her in the car, and i tried to call her name all the way home. she wouldn't look my way. we get home, she jumps out of the car, and the kids come tumbling out of the house and they just scream, "mommy, that's not mitzi!" so of course i dashed in, picked up the phone and called the vet. sure enough, i took her back and got our own fat dachshund. it was none the worse f
