c-span: jean h. baker, author of "the stevensons: a biography of an american family," what's the scope of this book? >> guest: well, it's pretty broad and it's a long book but it covers a lot of stevenson generations. and it also focuses on the most important, in some ways, of all the stevensons. and that's adlai ewing stevenson ii, who lived from 1900 to 1965 and, of course, was the losing democratic presidential candidate in 1952 and 1956. it took me a long time to do and i really was trying hard to look at layers of stevensons and different views of family life, etc., and not only do just a political biography of some of the best known stevensons. c-span: did you ever meet any of them? >> guest: yes, i did. the most prominent stevensons that i met were adlai stevenson ii's sister, that's buffie stevenson ives who was really an indomitable figure and she's the one i think who was partially responsible for the fact that the stevenson archive now numbers about 700 boxes of material. i guess every fam

i'm so glad to be on c-span. my question is we commonly speak in terms that we know that the police officers do a very dangerous job and we have a lot of respect for what they do because we know they are protectors. but the problem i have is why is it so difficult just to we'd out the bad cops? when you have the leader of the police from new york saying that the officer that strangled the guy is an eagle scout, he's a model cop. and your eyes are telling you that doesn't look like a model cop to you. how do you weed out the bad cops? guest: that's a great question as well. again, i think it has to go back to the initial selection process and be more selective doing psychological tests to see if they have the attributes and personality traits to serve urban communities as well as we have to stop this illusion of object tivity that we have toward police officers. i would love to say that i'm objective at all times but again i harbor my own biases. police officers are human. so i think we need to recognize that and

while you were enjoying lunch, o was being interviewed on c-span. the first question that i got was, why would josephus daniels a small town newspaper editor, be secretary of the navy duringa the first world war. the short answer to that is politics. daniels, the longer answer is, daniels was a very important player in the democratic party at both the national and state d and regional level.stat he was a member of the e democratic national committee for 20 years by the time the 1912 presidential election 1912 rolled around.d he was a newspaper publisher and arguably one of the most important democratic voices in the south. that is what put him on wilson's radar screen initially. then he played an important role in getting wilson nominated. then he played an important rolt in getting him elected. wilson came to appreciate daniels for his political dani wisdom, his connections, and power. so, he wanted daniels to be in the cabinet as a political advisor.and yo you say, ok. you persuaded us why he would want daniels in the cabinet, but why the navy. wh

"the financial times" leads with this editorial this morning. sony surrender is a setback for free speech. do you agree with that? guest: well, i certainly do. because any time you have a foreign government being able to affect discourse in the united states and especially in this way, with the threats that were made, clearly, this is a setback for free speech. the other question is what should sony have done? like everybody else, i would have liked to have seen sony keep the movie, but i can understand why they might have legal liability. they acted like most any company would act. really, it's not their responsibility to defend liberty in the united states. that responsibility belongs to the federal government and the obama administration and congress. so, clearly, we don't like what sony did. we don't like what paramount pictures did with that other movie, "team america world police" but the point is that it's not their responsibility to deal with

caller: good morning, c-span, and the wonderful c-span audience. i would just like to make a comment that probably has something to do with where we are at today, at the end of world war ii, rosie the river came out of the factory and she came home to run the family, rich or poor, white or black, and she became chairman of the board of the house. that remained basically constant until around 1974, when we had the massive oil price shock start to begin here to you all remember we used to pay about $.22 per gallon for gas and from there, it went to over four dollars. that and the chairman of the board of the house had to enter the labor market and come he for the limited number of jobs. everybody, butwn you needed two where one used to do it. my comment is, if we could somehow, and i am not saying i know many house debt than they love to be have stats, if we could not have us competing against each other, and take advantage of the productivity gains, it would be a better place for all, and whether the man stays home or the woman stays home, there wil
