♪ ♪ yes we will ♪ yes we will ♪ yes we will ♪ yes we will ♪ yes we will ♪ yes we will ♪ yes we will ♪ persecution ♪ through the pain ♪ yes we will ♪ yes we will ♪ yes we will >> he is the presiding for the pentecostal assemblies of the world incorporated, please welcome bishop charles h. ellis. >> greetings, my brothers and sisters. if you will just join hands with somebody. never underestimate the power of connection and the power of our touch. eternal god, we acknowledge that only you, oh lord, in this most separatist and divisive season, could ever gather a people of every age, hue, race, creed, various nationaltists, ethnicities and faiths to demonstrate a peaceful unity and fo foster a bright light of hope into the depths of global darkness. let the onlookers of curiosity now take note that this is the reason and the just cause of our assembling here together. it was a half century ago, lord, that right here in this house built by c.h. mason, that you ordained a young baptist preacher clothed many the maturity of civil rights conviction who found himself walking through the valley of the shadow of death. you empowered dr. martin luther king to lift his voice like a tru trumpet and assure the disenfranchised, forgotten, helpless, vulnerable, and the weak, that there was a promised land. as you graced moses to speak to a fatigued jewish people over 7,000 years ago, dr. king likewise prophetized what you enabled him to see. his shadow of death became a reality one day later on april 4th when a gunshot rang out over at the lorraine motel a few blocks from here. many declared that dr. king was just another false prophet. crying in an abandoned wilderness of despair. however, we stand here this evening to proclaim and to declare that the promised land that moses and, yes, dr. king saw yet exists even today. and its existence is not contingent upon who occupies the white house, nor is it reliant on the mutual cooperation of the united nations, but it exists because you gave us a promise and it continues because your word is true and shall stand forever. so this evening we serve notice to all the negative and oppressive powers that be that it is true that the mantle fell 50 years ago, but like the prophet elijah, we are that generation that ran over and picked up that mantle. and today we will leave here carrying the mantle of justice, the mantle of liberty, fairness, the mantle of equity and equality, the mantle of mutual respect and, most of all, love. and as elijah called upon you, the god of elijah with this mantle we shall call upon you as well, the god of abraham, isaac and jacob, the god of joseph, moses and joshua, the god of peter, james and john, the god of douglas, turner and duboyd, the god of truth and bethune, the of kick evers and abernathy. the god of c.h. mason, g.t. haywood and richard allen. and we know that you will answer us, and with this mantle we shall smote every red sea, every jordan, and tear down every barrier wall and we will enter and live together as brothers and sisters in god's promised land, in jesus' name we pray, amen. >> amen. >> he is the president of the progressive national baptist convention. please welcome dr. james cher here beneath this sacred dome to remember the life and legacy of your prophet and servant, dr. martin luther king jr. we remember with awe and reverence his courage to face the injustices of racism, of poverty and violence, and how he challenged us to transform this nation into a beloved community where every person is treated with dignity and respect, and where every person has the opportunity to live up to their god-given potential. and yet here we are, oh god, 50 years after his apotheosis and the nation seems to have gone backwards. racism has again lifted its serpentine head. economic injustice still burdens the poor. violence is everywhere and our leaders still prepare for war. in these challenging and difficult times, we need you, oh god, like never before. let your spirit fall on us. let your spirit fall on this land. let your spirit fall on our leaders and bring them to their senses. in these days, people are marching and crying out for social change and accountability. pe
