c-span conversation. like us on a book. follow us on twitter. >> this year c-span is touring cities across the country exploring american history. next, a look at our recent visit to wheeling, west virginia. you are watching american history tv, all weekend, every weekend, on c-span3. ♪ >> the first project funded by the federal government for road production was the national road that extended from cumberland, maryland, to wheeling, virginia. and one of the reasons for that was ohio had become a state in 1803. the country was moving west. we need to find a way of tying these new western areas in with the capital. and the easiest way of doing that in the early 19th century was to put in a road. so that road will eventually extend from baltimore westward into cumberland, maryland, uniontown, washington, pa, and then in 1818 it comes here to wheeling. when it comes here to wheeling that will give this community which at that time is about 50 years old -- it gives it the real spurt it needs to grow. over the next 20 to 25 years the population of wheeling will almost triple. wheeling starts as an outpost on the frontier. that river

. ♪ >> this year c-span is touring cities across the country, exploring american history. xt, he look at our recent visit to austin, texas. you're watching american history tv, all weekend, every weekend on c-span3. >> the capitol has a commanding presence in austin. it is at the top of the hill. capitol square is over 22 acres of park-like grounds. it has this beautiful renaissance revival style with sunset red granite. it is easy to see from almost any vantage point in downtown austin. we have a round dome, not unlike the nation's capitol, topped by the goddess of liberty at the top of the capitol dome. texans are proud of the fact that the texas capitol is actually taller than the national capital. when the first capitol was completed in 1853, it was very small and was not popular. officials started to make plans for a grander, more fitting state capitol for texas. they realized they could not afford what they had in mind and so they were able to set aside acres of land in the panhandle, and trade that so the texas capitol could be completed in 1888. it imparts to visito

hosted by our comcast cable partners, c-span's city tour staff recently visited many sites showcasing the city's history. learn more about wheeling all weekend, here on american history tv. >> we are here on the second floor of west virginia independence hall. we are proud to be the showcase and repository for all our state's surviving civil war battle flags. the states were in actual civil war battles carried by our west virginia troops. we have 12 flags from our union troops, and we have one captured confederate flag. we have conserved our civil war battle, putting them in climate controlled cases, where they will remain into perpetuity in safekeeping. we try to marry them with murals on occasion. our information for each flag will tell you where the troops came from, where they fought and their numbers killed.
