c-span's cities tour staff recently visited many sites showcasing the city's history. learn more about tulsa, oklahoma all weekend right here on american history tv. robert trepp: there are more native people in tulsa's 20 mile radius than anywhere else in the country. it is completely inside the boundaries of the muskogee, cherokee, or another reservation and it is the only city in the united states that has that status. the tribes that were native to this area were the osage. there were scattered bands of wichita, lots of tribes lived in this area because of the rich resources of not only the arkansas river, but the grand the other rivers down south. there was a huge political conflict in the muskogee nation. one signed a treaty saying all of the lands would be gone and they would move out west. that chief was executed. the united states, the only time they repealed a treaty, the united states did repeal that treaty, even though it had been ratified. the negotiations following that, his followers were allowed to move west to oklahoma, and they settled in the area --

c-span3, created by the cable industry. >> all weekend long, american history tv is featuring saint augustine, florida. the city was settled by the spanish explorer and 1565. our comcast cable partners worked with c-span cities tour staff when we recently traveled to san augustine to explore the city's rich history. learn more about saint augustine all weekend here on american history tv. shannon o'neill: we are at the san augustine lighthouse and museum. this is the location of florida's first lighthouse. there was originally a lighthouse built here sometime in the late 1600s and in the 1700s, it was turned into a functional lighthouse. after florida became a state they kind of what some money into it, made it into a lighthouse with an oil lamp, and they realized it was going to fall into the ocean, so they started building the current lighthouse we had today, and that was completed in 1874, and the old one fell into the ocean in 1880. the current tower we have has been here since 1874. the purpose of the lighthouse here -- there's kind of two. one is to serve as a location reminder to all of the ships in the area, so each lighthouse has its own individual day mark and night mark. our lighthouse day

in the meantime we've been traveling around the country bringing you some of the c-span cities tour. let's look at where we are this time. >> we're at the st. augustine lighthouse museum. this is the location of florida's first lighthouse. so the current tourer has been here since 1864. the purpose of the lighthouse one is to serve as a location reminder to all of the ships in the area as a museum we maintain that through volunteers and staff. we're a non-profit so we came in and restored the lighthouse and the original keeper's house which is from 1876 and preserved those for future generations so they can see how the lighthouse worked and how it was operated and the keepers that lived here. it was like a military post for them. they and their families lived here and it was a tough job. we have 219 steps to the top of the tower and they had to climb up every 2 to 3 hours to put oil in and clean things off and wind the clock mechanism so it was a rigorous job and we want we have a team of archeological researchers and they look at shipwrecks in our area. because we're the nation's ol

c-span cities tour staff visited many sites showcasing the city's history. >> we are standing in what we call saint augustine's oldest house. it is a national landmark, under the park service. it is the oldest house in florida, it is not the oldest house in the united states. i do believe for my research that it is probably the oldest spanish built residence in the u.s.. people used it as a residence for 200 years. about 100 years ago, it became a full-time museum. it was built in the 1720's, there had been a residence on this property before, but in 1702, there was an invasion by the english from south carolina. they occupied saint augustine for 52 days. everyone went inside the castillo days and marcos. -- de said marcos. english occupied the town, spanish reinforcements came from cuba as scared off the english. before they left they burned just about all the houses in town. the house that had been here was burned in the early 1700s. this was at least one of the replacements. there probably was sort of a hot in between. this was built in 1725. of the local shale stone of which the c
