i was c-span cities tour takes american history tv on the road to peter the history of cities across america. here is a recent program. >> they don't build airplanes like this anymore. this is a piece of history. i like to think about the lives that have been influenced and the careers this airplane might have changed. over the last 18 years, the airplane has been the centerpiece of our museum, but it has been a static centerpiece. so one of my first goals for the , museum was to figure out how could -- how we could bring new life back into the museum, to get these antique historic airplanes into the air, where they belong. along came the 75th anniversary of the d-day invasion. what a unique opportunity to join in a major part of history that these airplanes were built for and to partake in the 75th anniversary of the d-day invasion. our museum is known as the museum of mountain flying. it is dedicated to the pioneering spirit of a gentleman named bob johnson, who helped firefightingl programs here. i knew, to start a project like this, we have had this historic c-47 airplane here fo

. >> the c-span cities tour takes american history on the road. here's a recent program. >> so, the abraham lincoln presidential library museum opened its doors in 2005, but our collection goes back much further. in 1889, they established the illinois state historical library and since that time we have been collecting all the treasures that help illustrate the wonderful past of illinois. as you might imagine, the illinois story is not complete without a really close look at the life of abraham lincoln. in the lincoln collection we have 52,000 uses the cover every aspect of his life. the collection would include about 18,000 autographs written about abraham lincoln. he is the most written about american ever, which is quite staggering. on any given day a visitor to the museum is able to see about 100 original pieces from our collection that is on display. there is always a reason to come back to the abraham lincoln presidential museum because we are rotating the items out, putting new pieces on display at the time and we always like to say that a
