and then an exclusive on caesar chavez.e'll talk to his family members about how they are going to name a navy ship after him tomorrow. an exclusive interview with a family member tomorrow. >>> we'll see you at 7:00 and see you again at 11:00. >> bye-bye. >>> california's 99 public schools continue to grapple with tight budgets and complicated spending mandates. now more than ever our schools need the freedom to spend money where it is needed. i'm suzanne shaw. with over 50 spending mandates from county oversight to manned ne maintenance, it's inefficient, ineffective, and broken. we begin to deregulate the system and now we call on governor brown and the legislature to make the flexibility on grant spending permanent. assembly bill 18 proposes to do just that. simplify school finance. california's 33rd per pupil spending and more cuts are coming. we owe it to our kids to do a better job with the money that

representing the 150 workers in the program, but also representing all day laborers that stand out on caesar chavez looking for work. >> [speaking spanish] gracias. [applause] >> i come here to petition you today. we're talking about kids and education and children and youth activities. also think about the parents of those youth to make sure they also have services provided for them. thank you very much. supervisor campos: thank you. >> i am bob weisblat. i represent myself. i have a question about process. i have been listening to all of these people with a need for lots of services for the social safety net. this city is spending $50 million on bicycle paths. there is $30 million for changing cesar chavez. i am wondering if the money comes from a place where we can move that to a later date and spend the money so that older people can get meals. kids can stay off the streets. maybe when things get better economically, we can change the way cesar chavez works. [applause] supervisor campos: i do not know if anyone wants to respond to that. >> the project the speaker was referring to is the streets

this policy guided by conscience, not by opinion polls and i'm sure you're in good company with caesar chavezon polls when thinking about constitutional tenants that we want to provide the children of this country. the reasons i want to speak quickly to the reasons we wanted full implementation of the policy is that i think it's important to look at this on a case-by-case business. i kept thinking of the billy holiday song, motherless child, and we are excluding the children that come to the country who are motherless and often trafficked in and i've spoken to you about the child i worked with in the tenderloin who was trafficked in for sex and was a minor. and i think that it's important to think of those. [bell] president chiu: thank you very much. next speaker? >> patricia voy. speaking for myself right now. the last board of supervisors, every time i turned it on, i thought was pitting each ethnic group against each other. the comments that were made right and left every time i saw it made me sick. one thing we all have to do and this is a new -- relatively new board and a young board. we

you know, every city has a caesar chavez boulevard or avenue. and yet you follow these people who sort of joined him on his struggle. and they build a movement. but the movement -- and the movement really is about bringing powerful to this -- power to this community and subcommunity of people, farm workers, and really it's about this larger sense of power because cesar was such an important chicano icon. but yet you show that this building a movement is something that takes work, and it takes patience, and it takes alliances, and it takes -- and it just becomes this very, very sort of complicated, messy at times, disillusioning, you know, there are victories, and then the victories are sort of taken away. tell us about this journey that people who went with cesar, and tell us about your book. >> you know, one of things that occurred to me while as you said these books are all very different, they have something in common which is they're all about people who felt tremendously passionate about what they were doing. and to some degree all three of
