jackie, we heard from both manu and caitlyn on the state of play. what's your gut right now? is this hearing going to happen or not? >> you know, kate, i wouldn't venture to guess because there are so many factors here. you know, professor ford really has an enormous decision on her hands because this isn't for a lot of people even about her anymore. it's about, you know, the me too movement. it's about someone standing up for themselves, and frankly, for republicans, should she appear, the political risk actually gets a lot higher, frankly, because they will -- that will be on television. she will be able to tell her story in her own terms and you will have that visual of, you know, a bunch of male senators asking a woman about a sexual assault that she said happened. but again, the pressure is coming from both sides because the democrats are saying that republicans are rushing this. so you know, we'll have to see. we'll know presumably at 10:00 a.m., by 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. >> michael, she was saying that the white house aides to the president at this moment, they f

caitlyn, in the new bob woodward book, there is a dramatic moment described by bob woodward, whetheresident's lawyers felt there was no way the president should sit down with robert mueller. the president's former lawyer, john dowd, told the president, quoting from the book, quote, don't testify. it's either that or an orange jumpsuit. now today dowd is denying that. but what does it tell you about what's going on inside that white house? >> well, we've seen the strategy change over the last few months of going from the president really wanted to sit down with robert mueller and speak to him. and now the president has expressed hesitancy in recent days and weeks over sitting down with him and whether or not that would be a good idea. and that has been a big battle with the president and his legal team, and it's a big part of the reason why we have seen changes in the legal team, which is why john dowd ultimately left. he felt like he couldn't convince the president not to sit down with robert mueller. so a lot of what's written in this book, john dowd has denied he said those quotes,

i do want to bring in cnn caitlyn collins at the white house. today was the first white house press briefing since the op-ed, since the woodward book excerpts were released. press secretary sarah sanders saying the department should investigate the unnamed author of that op-ed. >> reporter: that's right, jim, the first white house press briefing since a lot of things have happened at the white house. but yes, the white house repeating today, they believe the justice department should look into the identity of that author who wrote that scathing anonymous op-ed. but pressed multiple times by reporters about what crime it is, the white house believes that this person who wrote this op-ed has committed, and what they did is not protected by the first amendment, they were unable to state any crime or any reason why they believe this should happen. only saying they believe it should. of course, jim, one thing is clear. the white house still doesn't know who it is that wrote this. president trump downplaying the chaos tonight, claiming the white house
