we all loved cal and miss cal desperately. there's no one quite like him but the good news is that he had an incredible amount of energy and enthusiasm to solve problems collaboratively and innovatively and that goes with me every day on what cal taught us and thank you. i know many of us are super sad. cal was one the one to turn that sadness into something positive. let's implement cal's vision. thank you. so they sort of forged a relationship and at the same time some non-cal tech young people came to cal tech and said we want to build rockets, too. so they hooked up with the cal tech student, frank molina, and they began to build rockets. and they became known as the suicide squad because they were using a lab at cal tech and they basically blew it up. explosions going on and learning laboratories were their chemicals. as a result of that, they kicked them out of cal tech, go somewhere where it's safe and about six miles from cal tech is an area here that was then totally deserted. there was nothing here. they started doing their rocket experiments up here. the very first one was on halloween day in 1936 and it didn't go all that well, but a rocket was just basically testing the motor, it wasn't going to shoot off. it actually did shoot off not towards the sky, but down and around and they actually had to scramble around and go running a bit for their lives because of the danger of the rocket. in the 1930's, the german military became very interested in rockets and this is when the na
