medi-cal shortfall is the difference between medicare -- medi-cal -- the medi-cal reimbursement rate and the somewhat fictitious fees that the hospital largely carries. it's not a statistic i usually like to look to, because it overinflates what may be the charitable giving of hospitals. in this case it's very striking, where other hospitals have, in fact, seen a rise in the medi-cal shortfall, which means they're providing more services, they're spending more money in effect as they see it on their balance sheet on medi-cal and poor recipients. and most people that are on long-term sub-acute care are on medi-cal. that is just striking. cpmc is not doing its fair share. there's a real question whether, in fact, acting in good faith, despite the things that it did do largely due to the pressure that was applied by the board of supervisors in san francisco. now it has to be called to task. it does -- there's no legal document that's going to require them to do it. unless there's new legislation that's somewhat difficult, but not impossible for san francisco to pass. but it is important

cal and i were together on abaco island until yesterday. cal, what's the latest from there?on that temporary protective status. all of the more sad when you think about so many of the haitians that had fled that earthquake in 2010. that word coming out of washington just about an hour ago that, number of 2500, important that people realize while 2500 people have been registered as missing, there still is no government masterlist of who is in shelters around this island and other islands. it gives you an idea of not only how difficult the task is but how hard it is for the government here in the bahamas to get ahead of what is necessary to get this country back on its feet. we hope to hear more tonight from the prime minister. he is going to be giving a national address at 8:00 p.m. local time. hopefully there's more details on that. as you mentioned, abaco island, grand bahama, two islands devastated by the storm. we are still seeing the arduous task of recover teams going through that rubble looking for bodies while the daldeath toll still stands at 50. it will undoubtedly

we listened to bill karins and cal perry with particular interest. the wind has picked up, brian, here in these last few hours. the rain has started coming down as well. i mentioned i was going up and down that highway all the way down to hatteras this morning to buckston as well. for folks who haven't been here, it is a thin strip of barrier islands that gets thinner as you get farther and farther down. as you get to hatteras, you get to the washout bill karins was talking about. as early as late this morning there were parts of that road that had been washed out and hague that even more treacherous for those who were making their way up and down the highway is the sand that blows over from the dunes. truly what was what made our drive most difficult as we found our way in the southern most part oeff those outer banks. the wind seems not to be a big deal to them. they close the main bridge down cape hatteras highway earlier this evening. it was closed because of wind. they say the folks i talked to say they get 50 to 60-mile-per-hour gusts, so that'
