bell helicopter where a cal fire division chief, a cal fire captain and a contracted pilot in that aircraftcopter, a sikorsky s 64 helicopter, also known as a sky crane with two people on board, was able to land safely. emergency crews rushing to the area here. this is near apache trail and pipeline avenue, again in cabazon around 720 last night. and those helicopters had been called to a nearby brushfire. the broadway fire that started roughly an hour earlier before spreading to about three acres and we saw a somber procession overnight. firefighters and police carrying those three bodies to the riverside county coroner's office about 25 miles from the crash site. both of those helicopters, we can tell you, were under contract to work for cal fire. the only two that were assigned to this fire. the helicopter that crashed was observing the fire. and according to fire officials, the sky crane that landed safely may have been conducting water or retardant drops onto those flames. so this morning, we are expecting an update from investigators and those three that were killed in that helicopter

cal fire deputy chief jason martin in napa county says they are fully staffed and ready. he also says there are some big changes since the last wildfires. cal fire crews have been working with napa counties, 20 fire councils and spent millions of dollars in fire safety improvements. what we've done is from the glass and the lightning complexes, we've looked at all the dozer lines. we put in for those incidents and we've leveraged them in our fire protection plan to maintain those. martin says keeping those dozer lines clear of debris will mean a faster response if another wildfire breaks out. any time we have red flag warnings, that's kind of our indicator to say, hey, am i prepared or do i have a go bag? have i checked in with my neighbors? rouz do i have a an escape route or a plan if i'm separated from my family? sue wagner says after two evacuations, her family did something new this year and bought a motorhome. if it turns out that we have to evacuate because god forbid, a fire comes, that's where we'll probably stay. cal fire and napa county says during this red fla

we saw cal fire air tankers arriving in the last 15 minutes. we no structures are threatened but firefighters do not indicate if there are sheds or barns or homes but we no structures are threatened. we don't know about any evacuations at this point but like i said, san jose firefighters are there and cal fire has just arrived. in there helping to put out this fire. of course, we will keep an eye on these conditions unfortunately, temperatures are mild today around 70 degrees in san jose. >> it will be helping the firefighters, the brush is so dry this time of the year that they will still have to get a pretty quick attack on it. i wouldn't be surprised if we get air drops on this within the next half hour. you can see again it's here in the east foothills, happening right now, the exact location of the fire, 14,300 clayton road, so anyone around clayton road, right near three springs road, they may have some evacuations that go into place here as we roll through the next 30 to 45 minutes so make sure to have the phones on with the alerts. we d

cal fire believes the new helicopters will be a huge tool in fighting large, dangerous wildfires. being able to continue to attack the fire at night offers a slew of advantages. the temperature is usually cooler, the wind slower, and the humidity higher. >> all those major points of, of, um, fire, are too our advantage at night based off of those environmental conditions. >> reporter: the first night flights launched last year, but cal fire plans to really ramp them up as we head toward what's typically the peak of fire season this year. officials believe the night flights will be critical in saving both homes and lives. berman himself has already been on some of the flights and says he can't wait to hop on even more. >> the helicopters were used on a limited basis last year. they'll be used much more frequently going forward. one obstacle right now is that not all pilots are trained to fly at night, but cal fire is trying to get them up to speed. >>> with the weather we've been having, it feels like we're just not going to have one of those big fire this is year. at least not in

there were a cal fire division chief, one cal fire captain and one contract pilot. that crash caused an extra four acres to burn, which the firefighters quickly put out. police are investigating another freeway shooting in the east bay that sent one person to the hospital . the victim was a passenger and was shot while traveling on interstate 580. this happened in san leandro yesterday afternoon near grand avenue. lamonica peters has the latest on the investigation and how the community is reacting. california highway patrol says a shooting was reported around 215 sunday afternoon. a passenger in a vehicle traveling eastbound on 580 was shot by someone in another car. it's definitely a big fear when you're driving because people get very angry for no reason when it's driving. the victim was taken to a nearby hospital and their current condition is unknown. chp has not confirmed a motive for the shooting. drivers we spoke to say they're more concerned now for their safety on the road and i want to get out of my comfort zone and i pull out a gun on me or something. so
