because this fire is burning above where people live, cal fire tells us that no homes, no structures, are threatened. the fire that started just before midnight, it's now about more than six acred in size and 70 percent contained. based on a conversation we had with cal fire over the past couple of minutes. and if you look at video, notice some of the flames are burning very hot. very fast. and the comment we heard from cal fire as well, that's four year of drought, you have a lot of heavy fuels out there cal fire's deployed 11 engines, 3 tenders, 4 hand crews. because the area where it's burning is remote end of san felipe road in southeastern part of san jose, it's very steep it's near and along a 50-foot drop-off, according to cal fire, the agencies have to rely on hand crews, more than anything else. for the firefighters trying to navigate that terrain, it's going to take more time. they expect them to be here well into the morning if not part of the afternoon. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. >>> on a wider scale now, also happening wildfires raging across the w

the good news from cal fire tonight containment is now 12%. >> get a sense of how big the fire is. this is day 7 of the fire fight. it is the best day yet for firefighters. at least as far as the weather is concerned. ktvu's john sasaki is in lake county now. what is the weather like up there today? >> much needed break for firefighters from the horrible weather. super hot, windy and very low humidity but today it has been much better. mother nature seems to be cooperating. today the temperatures have been cooler. 20 plus degrees cooler than it was and it has been humid. there has been cloud cover all day long and that is causing the fire to settle down. highway 20 we saw lots of burned ground but never saw flames. almost appeared this is just a mopping up phase. that is good. officials say the fire is far from being detained. once the temperatures rise the flames will take up again. spring valley is still in harm's way after the fire jumped highway 20 yesterday. >> i was devastated. i knew -- i know the outlay of the valley. and there is vegetation all the way, except for a few sp

despite today's dry conditions, cal fire's emergency command center was on high alert. >> we'll see sporadic opportunities for lightning or thunder cells to be moving through the bay area over the next 36 to 72 hours. >> reporter: the lightning was sporadic, and almost exclusively in the south bay. none of the lightning strikes were like these, so-called positive strikes that hit the ground like the ones that started fires in the central valley last week. but cal fire sent crews out to make sure. >> we're currently investigating one strike that appears to be maybe a positive strike. it's off county line road. >> so we have a couple groups of lightning strikes, one that's over the valley between guadalupe reservoir. >> reporter: california fire says no fires were sparked. they point out the santa barbara area shows huge clusters of strikes, 2,700 in the past 24 hours. >> we're checking the entire bay area here and you really only see about eight strikes so far. but that obviously can change through the rest of the day as the storms develop and grow and then shrink back down again. >> reporter

cal fire says all the vegetation is not just dry, it's dry to the core creating fire conditions that are very dangerous and very extreme. it is only about 5% contained at this point and growing. it's a fire that started just wednesday. by friday it was 15,000 acres and doubled in size every day since. at last check, it was 54,000 acres, the equivalent of 84 square miles. people were forced from campgrounds there, but so were the residents. this woman is one of 12,000 people who were ordered to get

it is 30% contained. >>> closer to home cal fire lifted all evacuation orders linked to the jerusalem fire. expect full containment. that fire is 90% contained. the fire has destroyed nine homes, charred more than 25,000 acres. it broke out in the jerusalem valley area. the nearby rocky fire is now fully contained. >>> moving on, san jose police shot at suspects three times in the last eight days bringing the number of officer-involved shootings to seven in a year. police encntered a man wanted in a homicide case. they opened fire and the bank by stander was almost shot, as well. david louie was live at the strip mall where it happened with the full story. >> reporter: the owner of a san jose laundromat here says that the bullet actually passed through his legs as police were shooting at their suspect. it was a very close call that police say they had very little choice. san jose police had information that a murder suspect was seen at the strip mall about 10:00 sunday night and they spotted him as soon as they arrived. armed with an arrest warrant officers told them to get on the gro

cal fire still reporting 2500 acres burned, though we expected that number to grow once the firefighters get a better look in the sunlight and again, only 5% containment. now, this brush fire started yesterday afternoon around 2:30 near tesla and corral hoe low. first report was 100 acres, then 500, within four hours it quadrupled to 2000 acres. the conditions have been very dry and windy. very scary for a couple of horse ranchers who live out in that area. >> we got 16 horses out. luckily -- luckily we have plenty of rigs that can do it. that one hauled six and the rest haul four and good friends that came and family and -- >> the smoke came and the fire chief said it's time to evacuate. in ten minutes. >> reporter: those people did get out okay and as far as we mow no damage to their property. 250 firefighters working this event called the tesla fire did save several homes, they only lost a vacant structure at the carnegie motorcycle park which is behind the road block behind me several piles down the road, we are here at greenville am tesla. they have shut down in tech of tesla road.

one of the biggest fires one that cal fire is really dealing with the rocky fire in lake county. so far 24 homes have been destroyed. 6300 people -- 6300 others are threatened and thousands have been ordered to evacuate. ktvu fox 23t rosemary orozco is in our newsroom now. what is the latest. >> reporter: cal fire says this rocky fire is their biggest priority right now. there are more than 2700 people firefighters and other personnel working with cal fire to get a handle on the rocky fire. the fire has burned 5400 acres or 84 square mile. it is only 5% contained. several have made this particularly challenging to fight. the fact it's burning in rugged terrain. the other major challenge is the extremely dry vegetation in the area thanks to drought. firefighters with decades of experience say they have never seen a fire burn quite like this one and it's because of the dry conditions. the fire has grown inside quickly. at one point it doubled in size at a five hour period. it's tough for firefighters to know where the flames will go next. this fire is large enough to create its own

we're expecting an update from cal fire at 7:00. no containment in sight. 150 people have been evacuated as we watch the aerial assault up in lake county. the jerusalem fire, another big fire retardant drop coming from cal fire. we were talking about the winds on this thing earlier. >> the peak wind of the day is right around 4:00, 5:00. the wind is going to be an issue for the next couple days. we had the strong onshore flow coming and the wind is going to be prevalent from now through thursday. so it's going to be tough going for firefighters up there who are undoubtedly fatigued. now you're dealing with the wind peaking from 20 to 25 miles per hour. not good. the weather is not going to be a help. >> we're getting a good idea from these pictures how rough the terrain is. we talk about that it's bad terrain. that gives you a good idea exactly how rough it is because they're hitting this thing from everything from the air. >> we're getting to the point where a fire will create its own weather as well. that said, mother nature's air

cal fire hopes to have it fully contained by thursday. >>> another firefighter has died fighting a wild fire until southern california. michael was killed saturday night when a tree fell on him while he was battling the sierra fire near lake tahoe. another firefighter was injured in that incident. >>> we are following developing news from ferguson, missouri. there was another police shooting. it happened during a protest marking the death of michael brown. allie rasmus is in our newsroom. what is the latest from ferguson? >> reporter: it began as a full of day of peaceful protests to mark the one year anniversary of michael brown's death. but witnesses and police in the area say after dark things became intense. people in the crowd who had be participating could hear the gunfire and some of the officer in the area started getting down on the ground for cover. four plain clothed police saysed after the girl. police chief said the rival groups were criminals, not protestors. >> there is a small group of people in there that are intent on making sure that we don't have peace that prevails.

. >>> in the next half hour we expect an update from cal fire. the very latest on that jerusalem fire. it has spread from lake county into nap county it's getting bigger and bigger allie rasmus is here in our studios. >> reporter: here's a map of where this fire fight is focused. directly east of clear lake and west. it is massive at 70,000 acres. firefighters really have a handle on this. it's 88% contained. a week ago rocky fire was cal fire's top priority and now they are moving the resources south to the new fire. the jerusalem fire broke out on sunday. it burned 14,000 acres and it's only 5% contained so the concern it will continue to grow and threaten people. it's already forced 150 people from their homes because of mandatory evacuations to the surrounding area. including parts of lake and napa county. other people who live in that area and haven't been ordered to evacuate yet should be prepared because this fire is still growing. cal fire says some of the challenges they are facing is dry brush, tough terrain, and limited road access and
