cal fire and emergency officials are getting a clearer picture of the extent of the damage. the fire has destroyed 585 homes. the total number destroyed is higher than that. another 9,000 homes are still threatened. a cal fire chief talked about where the fire is head next and why it's such a difficult thing to try to predict. >> relative to the initial start of this fire, it's relatively stable right now. however there is a lot of hot spots. we only have 10% containment around the perimeter and our efforts are working hard add trying to contain a higher percentage of containment. >> reporter: 23,000 people in lake county have been displaced by this fire. many are staying at the evacuation centers that have been set up in kelseyville and the napa county fairgrounds. there are evacuation orders still in effect. near highway 29 and 175. obviously people are not allowed to go back in just yet. cal fire officials issued an evacuation advisory for parts of napa county. the communities of pope, valley, and angwin. that is just an advisory. keep your stuff ready. the essential items

cal fire says the damage is now close to 600 homes lost and thousands more threatened by this fast growing fire. one resident tells us most of the homes in his neighborhood were wiped out. >> there was 200 -- i probably -- what i could see maybe 20? i don't know. or less. >> if i would have came back and my house would have been like over here, it would be heart-breaking just unbelievable heart-breaking. >> reporter: on the front lines firefighters got a little bit of relief. skies cleared up just enough for air support to drop water from above. firefighters on the ground exhausted but persistent were digging in as flames from the valley fire continued to roll down the hillside. now we are learning from cal fire that weather wassen their side yesterday. -- was on their side yesterday. hopefully it will be a key and i can tell you right now it is much cooler than it was yesterday morning when we were here. so hopefully that does help out the firefighters on the ground. reporting live in middletown, cate cauguiran, kpix 5. >> well, eight of the people who lost their homes in the valley fire

cal fire confirms at least one person died in the fire. we do not know anymore details about that death. hundreds of homes have been completely destroyed. others damaged. governor jerry brown declared a state of emergency in lake and napa counties. the valley fire caught thousands of people by surprise. many of them were forced to evacuate with a few seconds notice. brian flores is in live now at the main evacuation center in calistoga. brian, you're checking in on how these people are doing. i know they are getting a lot of donations. we can't even imagine how that must feel. >> it's exhausting for many of them. this is the evacuation center for those that had to evacuate from the valley fire has been we've been talking about. while many are tired and weary, this community has come together to help out their neighbors. as we go to video now, an estimated 1,000 people are here at fairgrounds. many camped out in tents. others are slipping in motor homes. and others are use their car as shelter. they are simply awaiting word. one is their ho
