there are a number of colleges, cal lutheran.ids on wednesday night because they allow kids 18 and younger. our sara stinson had been to that bar on a number of occasions. because everybody is describing the chaos inside the bar and how it was very difficult to get out. a lot of them had to break windows to get out because there's only one main entrance in. can you explain the layout of that bar and what's it like inside? >> reporter: i can only imagine how chaotic and devastating and scary it meet have been. there's basically one way in, one way out. they try to keep it that way to make sure they can dpi. i.d. people. so they have a doorman and they have a huge line. it's very popular. it's fun. it his good country music usually on wednesdays, college night. like you said a lot of universities in the area and you can meet people from other colleges and a lot of people drive there from kind of far away. northridge is 30 minutes. pepperdine 30 minutes but they all come to this bar. coming there they must have been feeling trapped.

wednesday ritual, college night, a popular gathering for college students here from moorpark college, cal lutheran, among other schools in the evening. students we spoke with describe a terrifying scene. >> all i saw was once the shots rang out and we were heading under the stools. >> i'm pretty sure i saw him. i'll never get that picture out of my head. we dropped and we heard the gunshots. a lot of gunshots. a lot of gunshots. i don't even -- a lot. and i was just laying there. >> reporter: so many questions yet to be answered, who this person was, why he fired on this crowd. a dimly lit nightclub on this wednesday night. gun the gunman has been confirmed dead. a deputy was injured. he responded to shots fired and was among the best to take bullets, is our understanding, in the hospital right now. 11 people have been injured but their status is unconfirmed. the deputy is the only one in surgery right now. it's an active scene, sad faces. not at all the way they thought college night would end in thousand oaks. >> so tragic to hear. we'll continue to follow the developing story that's happening.

he was a recent graduate of cal lutheran university and worked as social worker helping to support families and children with special needs. tonight, he is credited with heroically saving lives during the tragedy. blake dingman was 21. tonight, his girlfriend writing, "my heart is hurting more than words can say. i cannot believe you're gone. i am so grateful for our little infinity." dan manrique was a marine corps veteran who served in the middle east in 2007. he was an avid dodgers fan. and tonight, heartbreak for this man, jason coffman, showing a picture of his son, cody, early this morning. at the time, he was still searching, still praying. then, just a few hours later, he learned he lost his son. >> we did just get the news that he was one of the 11 that were hit and killed last night. >> reporter: cody was his first-born son. >> only him and i know how much i love. >> reporter: a big brother, an umpire for youth baseball, he was about to enlist in the army. >> my son was on his -- he was on his way to fulfilling his dream of -- of serving the country. >> reporter: in fact, he says

a couple of schools are cal lutheran, pepperdine, lsu and reports from a lot of witnesses saying they can't contact family members get lost when they were inside. you have a lot of concerned parents and family members out there. >> they take the phone off and silence it and wonder if they were at the bar. a frightening time for this to happen. it happened at 11:20 at night, prime time for college bar and there were hundreds of people inside what appears to be a massive country-western bar and wednesday night, college students, everybody in their, we heard from a 19-year-old girl, a bunch of young kids trying to have fun and another mass shooting in this country. >> a lot of witnesses say they were able to escape the people hiding in the bathrooms, people made their way to the attic of this building and reports that some people were throwing chairs at the window to smash and break those windows so they could escape out the windows of the building. you hear stories of the hero who was an army veteran who threw a woman to get her out but sorry i hurt you but i had to get you out of there
