msnbc editor cal perry has been going through the new flash point intelligence report. atest. cal, when you ask people about isis finance they usually say oil. that's what has come up in the presidential debates. but what have we found in this report? >> it goes far deeper than oil. we think their annual operating budget is somewhere around $500 million a year. think about all of the territory that they've taken in syria and in iraq and the banks that they overran. we think that they got somewhere in the neighborhood of $400 million in cash out of those banks. infrastructure and businesses. people who fled the fighting, fled the violence. they left their businesses behind and those have been taken over. we should also mention at this point those antiquities. we're all familiar with the video of them destroying these antentiquitie antiquities. you mentioned oil, 22,000 barrels a day. the black market is huge for oil and antiquities. the human trafficking situation, they make a boat load money off of that. finally, taxes. in isis territory they tax people who live there. t

joining us now is msnbc editor of our discovery desk, cal perry. good to have you with me here as we get started here. sunrise is there upon paris now and people are waking up in this horrific reality of theirs and many are asking why and who. and that really is the toughest at this point. earlier we had a senior u.s. intelligence counterterrorism official telling nbc news, because of the attacks, because of how they look so far, maybe not so much isis, possibly al qaeda. but you also have your thoughts on who it may be? >> well, the level of coordination is what is lending people to sort of go the al qaeda route. this is what we would classify as a complex attack, with multiple moving pieces. clearly this was well preplanned, well scouted in advance. this had an operational security element to it, an element of secre secrecy. and as you mentioned, people in paris waking up to 1,500 members of the army on the streets of the french capital. that's a new reality for people in paris. one of the things we should mention, this neighborhood in paris is a

msnbc's cal perry is tracking the online activity. e first time i read it, i thought it was a joke. it's not a joke. >> no, it sounds crazy, but it's not a joke. it's coming from counterterrorism analysts affiliated with the u.s. army. they're saying isis has a help desk, manned by senior operatives around the clock. it was designed with the express purpose of helping jihadists, as they say, use encryption and other secure communication to both talk to each other and carry out these attacks. this helps explain what we have seen playing out on the ground in paris, which is a very good operational security pattern by this group. they're able to carry out these attacks without letting people know. you mentioned that there is this suspect, abaaoud. one of the things the i.t. desk does, it distributes a monthly magazine. he actually gave an interview on that magazine. we know he was on the french radar. why he wasn't picked up and able to be found especially after the "charlie hebdo" attacks, when they said he could have been involved in th

joining us now is msnbc's cal perry who has been tracking this. cal, what can you tell us?ocial media is really that double-edged sword. it was a great help during the attack, during the first hours of the attack as the people who were stuck in the theater were communicating with the police. now we're seeing an outcry on social media, especially in europe against the refugees. you mentioned that passport. a lot of people concerned refugees are going to bring this stuff into europe. there's been some misinformation on social media. the first photo, this is the refugee camp in calais. a fire breaking out friday night. the initial reports were this was a fire set as retaliation. that's simply not true. it was a fire that broke out because of some cookers that overheated. the fire quickly spread. the second thing we have for you, this is where richard lui has been reporting from today. this is a photo again on friday night that was circulated on social media. people saying an outpouring of support. there is an old photo. this photo was after the "charlie hebdo" attacks. same he

joining me in the studio is editor of our discovery desk, cal perry. let's pick up on what keir was describing. you following the social media, how so many got their stories out. >> there is a new dynamic. everything happens in real time in digital and we see it as it happens. the gun men set off these bombs outside the stadium, they swept through these restaurants and then in the music hall. let's show you inside the music hall you can see how packed it is in there to give our viewers the idea. this is not from yesterday, these are separate photos. look how jam-packed it gets. >> we're talking about 1,000 people. >> about 1,000, maybe 1500. >> this was a sold-out event. >> sold-out event, packed. when the gun men went into that music hall it wasn't cleerp, was this going to be a long and drawn out hostage situation, oftentimes in terrorist attacks they like to control the media. we saw that in mumbai for 72 hours we're staring at a picture of the hotel. there was a thought maybe this will be long and drawn out. people started tweeting, started putting

here in our studios, cal perry. also a veteran of the region. cal, people are going to hear hezbollah. people are going to hear that this area of beirut is under their sphere of influence. what does it mean there locally and please help us in terms of how this fits in the region. what does this have to do with the fighting in syria, for example? >> start with taking a look at the country. this is a country that is 100 times smaller than syria but has 2 million syrian refugees living in it. this is a country that is very much involved in what's happening in syria. if you go back a few months to june, the head of hezbollah, secretary general hassan nasrallah giving a speech to his supporters declared open war on the islamic state. this is a country that finds itself geographically in the middle of what's going on in the region and also politically in the middle of what's going on in the region. you want to drive a wedge between the various parties in lebanon and especially with the everyday civilian in lebanon, this is what you do. >> yet, people w

msnbc discovery desk editor cal perry is with us now. us a sense, cal, what is anonymous actually doing here and is it helping or hurting this investigation? >> well, they've proven themselves very good at sort of the obvious public stuff that's already out there, so twitter accounts that are linked to isis, websites that are obviously linked to isis. they're good at getting that information out there. in the past what they've done, their online activism as what they would call it has listed a list of felonies for the u.s., they crashed the church of scientology and visa and paypal and sony pictures. they are good at getting the obvious stuff, what are their capabilities at the stuff we want to know the dark web stuff, the possible planning. that they haven't proven very well at yet. just as isis is good at getting people online and recruiting people online, anonymous is getting good at getting people who want to fight isis online digitally. >> they are good at bringing those people in, do they harness them, you look at this guy, you look

>> cal perry, thank you very much.nt to reset for you the bottom of the hour, french officials now say they have conducted more than 400 raids over the past three nights resulting in the arrest of dozens of people. one of them, a raid on an apartment in paris as they sought abdelhamid abaaoud, the siege lasted for seven hours, included an intense gun battle. at least seven were arrested according to french officials. a young woman in the apartment was killed when a charge exploded. and also a man there was killed. none of their identities have been revealed. at least five officers were also hurt. police are also hot on the trail of this man, salah abdeslam and put out a bulletin to police across europe asking them to watch out for a car that abdeslam may be riding in. more on that as we get it. after the raid french president francois hollande spoke to the french people saying his country is at war with isis terrorists but france must resist acts of hate and added despite the attacks, france would continue to accept re

i want to bring back nbc news terrorism analyst evan coleman, cal perry. u've also spent a number of years overseas. and a number of different areas covering these stories. when you see this video, cal, what does it say to you that it is so pointed? >> so, i see this as a video that makes it very clear. we talk about isis as a social media savvy group. well, i think they've graduated into being media savvy. they're clearly -- on what people are really worried about. and this has been a banner day for isis propaganda. we started the day by talking about this monthly magazine, which put out this photo of the purported, they say, the bomb that they use to bring down that russian airliner. and then today, we have obviously this video, with very frightening images for anybody living on the east coast, anybody in new york city. but, again, as you said, we need to stress, no specific threat. some of this video is recycled. they've added fresh video on the top of it showing the french president. that's the new section of it. but certainly, this is a group that has

cal perry has been combing social media looking for new pieces of the story. i understand you have new video. >> new video showing the night of the attack. this is cell phone video we have just gotten. the location here is the restaurant right around the corner. you are looking there down the alley that runs behind the bataclan club. i want you to hear the sound of sirens, obviously. you will hear some gunfire here shortly and another explosion. gives you the sense of the terror. you will see people taking cover next to the cafes, staying away from the glass. we are obviously pixelating the bodies there on the ground. brian, this just gives you a sense of the panic, the chaos that existed that night behind the alleyway in that club. >> absolutely. we recall there were gunshots audible outside along with about five flash-bang grenade concussions inside as the raid was started by french authorities. and as life kind of returns to normal, and being that everyone these days has a device on them, so many different angles of this have emerged. to andrea mitchell now

msnbc's cal perry joins me now. toring the details on the victims and the latest on the situation. cal, what do you have for us? >> yeah, let me be clear, nbc news cannot independently verify a lot of this. it's still very early. but what we are hearing, on mali state television, they are saying that 18 bodies were discovered. u.n. officials have said to "the new york times" that that number could be higher. but again, we need to stress, very early hours. this is also africa, where information is not necessarily as free-flowing or as direct as we would see in a place like paris. tamron, let me give you a bit of background on mali. we had an attack in august in mali on august 2nd in the central part of the country. that was seen as a bold move. that's on the map. that was seen as a bold move by, again, these groups operating in the north. this is a country that straddle as an arab north with an african south, as we see so many of these countries now struggling through these very issues. at the time in august, it was s

cal perry is here with us because we are in possession of some new exclusive video showing the end ofhe music venue in paris. >> brian, you will remember very well as we covered this as it unfolded. people inside the theater trying to communicate with anti-terror forces outside. here comes new exclusive video that we have obtained, you can see there the anti-terror police moving in on the theater. this raid took about 20 minutes to breach and then to clear. the clearing of the theater was very difficult. the concern on the part of anti-terror forces was that the theater could have been rigged with more explosives. that of course slowed down their progress. as we watch this video, you can see the breach there is the the front of the building. what you're not seeing is that a lot of the patrons who were there in the theater were fleeing out the back. that is something that was very violent at the time. also important to node here, brian, and you know this better than anyone, the emergency responders there, standing by as a secondary force to deal with the wounded. there was nearly 100 p

[ gunshots ] >> so there the voice of the woman followed by an explosion. and let's keep in mind that explosion, it collapsed the entire floor of that apartment building. and has made the investigation very difficult. it's also important to remember that the french knowing this was not an isolated incident, belgian officials knowing it was not isolated ins dint and trying to track down the webs, they're under a time crunch here and we're hearing french officials believe a man next to her was likely to have killed himself which brought that apartment building down. we're look
