i want to bring in nbc's senior editor cal perry for more. l, i want to talk a bit more about what the family is saying versus what you're learning law enforcement is saying. after this student pulled out those knives, the campus police officer did shoot him in sort of the shoulder/neck area. >> it feels like the student was shot in the torso in what you call the main body mass which is what police are trained to do. now, the father is obviously very upset. he's been posting on facebook in the last 48 hours. we have some further statements from him. he says there are many questions to be answered as to what happened and what could have been done to avoid the use of lethal force. you see he says everything is going to be vent investigated. the question here is the situational awareness of the police officer. when you look at that video, you see a very tense scene. wh you're not seeing there as we've blurred out the face of this kid is that he has blood coming from his mouth. there was some kind of confrontation that took place as that officer a

i'm joined by cal perry. a lasting peace between palestinians and israel. >> for the obama administration, they view it as the main obstacle to peace. in what they call a two state solution. here is the state of israel with the west bank, the gaza strip would be right here. if you take a look at the map with settlements on it, tre are 125. your blue dotare settlements. 125 sanctioned settlements. still considered illegal under international law. plus 100 outposts. what it does, it makes for a very could be fusie confusing m. in red, the settlements. keep in mind, this is the occupied west bank. this is the security wall that runs here. the big wall that they put in. now, keep in mind in addition to these settlements, you have roads to support the settlements. this road here is closed. it's only accessible by people who live on the settlement. this is what palestinians talk about when they talk about lack of access. settlements have their own water supply, their own schools. it's a piece of israel in the west

joining me here at 30 rock, msnbc senior editor cal perry. this has been a hot story online and certainly through social media. do we have any wort of a motive? >> no, we don't. police are saying the investigation is und way so they don't want to discuss what a potential motive could be because they're still going through those witness interviews, and as we saw in that dramatic and as you said sometimes disturbing video, the student is obviously very animated and there's a threat there to all the students surrounding him. you see him there in the blue shirt. the investigation, we found out, is being carried out not only by reno police, but also the county sheriff's office and the fbi. the question is as the motive becomes more and more clear and we've heard it could have been a fight, it could have been a disturbed student, it could be any number of possibilities, what the use of force was from that police officer. the high school student was shot one time by the officer, as you said in critical condition. the investigation is just getting un

cal perry is at the protest camp near cannon ball, north dakota. cal, it is obviously getting cold out there. tell us what the latest is on the ground. >> reporter: part of the big story here now is becoming the weather. i mean this is becoming a very dangerous situation for a lot of the people in the camp who are not prepared for this weather. the temperature has dropped about 20 degrees in just the past hour. this wind is picking up. now, as you mentioned, yesterday was really a day of jubilation for the people in the camp. they thought it was over. they thought the pipeline was going to be stopped in its tracks, that this wouldn't cross the missouri river. late last night we heard from the energy company, and they said they were going to continue on, that it was not going to stop them. they really thumbed their nose at the administration, saying the administration was an anti-energy administration. so it's unclear what's going to happen next although, again, in the next two or three days, we're looking at sub zero temperatures, a wind chill of m

i want to bring in my colleagues cal perry and ahmen at the big board.et's talk about the settlements and why this is such a big deal. >> such a contentious issue, confusing and complicated. this is the west backe here. and the gaza strip here. this is the beginnings of a two-state solution if you were to have palestinian territory here and the gaza strip. this is occupied palestinian land here. this is based on the 1967 borders. as we go closer in, though, these are the settlements. there are according to an israeli human rights organization, at least 125, each one of these blue dots is an israeli settlements. those are the ones authorized. you have in addition to that 100 illegal outposts in here. all this in yellow is pretty much areas that are restricted to palestinians. what does that mean? >> well, this is what makes this such a sensitive issue. israelis believe and argue these are jewish communities that they have the right to build there. as you pointed out on the map, the expansion and building of jewish settlements in the occupied palestinian t

cal perry has been monitoring for us.t do we know about the hijackers and why did they decide to surrender? >> they got what they wanted. they got out of libya and were able to land in malta. we heard from the prime minister of malta a short time ago that they were armed. they did have at least one grenade and handguns. that was a question. we knew this was politically motivated. there was some question as to whether or not they were armed or if it was a bluff. they were armed. thankfully it ended peacefully. this was a politically motivated hi jacking. we are talking about a plane that originated from a town that's seen brutal fighting since gadhafi was removed from power in 2011. this town doesn't have good airport security. there really isn't a security apparatus in place. the runway is three miles from where the passenger terminal is. it ease' si to penetrate the airliners. in december, a few airplanes from the same airline were shot at on the run way. this is defunct at this point. >> thanks for that. up next, travel
