this is because of the caldor fire. the city of south lake tahoe is under evacuation warning and bart and memorial hospital is being evacuated as well. evacuation orders for the first time for the people in the tahoe basin and amador county. they were all included in this. more people in el dorado and alpine counties are also under new orders. fire crews say the caldor fire experienced, quote, rapid spread. the caldor fire has burned 263 square miles or an area larger than the size of san jose and oakland combined. containment dropped to 13%. >>> a lot to track of right now. let's bring in meteorologist kari hall monitoring some of this as well. smoke conditions that could come into the bay area. >> yeah. we've seen a lot of smoke over the past couple days and it has cleared a little bit, but then take a look at the fire and what we've seen, the perimeter, the yellow dots indicate the area that's burned, the red dots indicate active fire. as we get a closer look as this continues to spread rapidly off towards the east,

let's talk about what firefighters are up against with the caldor fire. today looking at temperatures in the mid-70s. humidity low down to about 10 to 20%. west southwesterly winds 15 to 20. gusts up to 30 and you can see that wind flow and that could push the flames into the south lake tahoe area. that's why it's such a big concern. we are watch that closely for you with that red flag warning in effect up in the sierra for the caldor fire and the tahoe fire. all the locations shaded in that red color. that's until tomorrow at 11:00 p.m. really watching the next 48 hours here. as we look to our temperatures here in the bay area. we are looking at a different story. we have that ocean breeze kicking in for us. with it better air quality and cooler temperatures. that sea breeze pushing that haze and smoke away from us. pushing it into the tahoe area with those westerly winds. still looking at temperatures in the upper 40's in santa rose a50's to low to mid-60s's and fog along the coast and around the bay. a bit of mist and drizzle even along the coast. look

we'retill seeing the caldor fire spreading.e going to have smoke. taking a look at what's going on, how far the leading edge of these active fires are from where south lake tahoe is about seven miles at this point. we're going to get another updates in the next 20 minutes. this is a live look at the fire from armstrong lookout from around the highway 88 area looking toward the caldor fire where the billows of smoke are basically being forced high into the atmosphere. it's showing that that fire is spreading quickly and that's what we're concerned about over the next couple days as new red flag warning warnings go up around the dixie fire that is still burning at this point. a shift in the wind direction could push this closer to south lake tahoe area. moderate air quality to begin, going into the afternoon still going to be hazy and smoky at times. that air quality advisory is a step below the spare the air alert like over the weekend, but we are expecting a stronger westerly wind to kick out some of that smoke from the bay are

the caldor fire continues. it was a long, slow-moving line of cars for most of the day as people tried getting out of town. you can see the map right now. this is how big an area it is that's been told to evacuate. it's significant. everyone being told to head east toward nevada, since westbound highway 50 is closed. now cal fire had a news conference about 30 minutes ago. we were listening intently. the fire has made its way to christmas valley area. but as of now, no structures have been damaged. they brought in additional resources that just arrived in order to protect lake tahoe. it took more than three hours for everyone to get out of town on highway 50. but officials are appreciative that everyone worked together to get out safely. thom jensen joins us in south lake tahoe. we saw how slow that was, really going. but we're hearing from cal fire, it's going to be a dicey evening for them. >> reporter: it really is, especially with the winds that are being forecasted. extreme gusts over the summit tonight an

the caldor fire isn't showing some rare behavior. at the fire weather research lab it the fire is unique because it is burning through the entire elevation of the sierra nevada. last week, some the experts were saying there is no way is going to get to the tahoe basin. yet here it is. the dixie fire is doing the same thing. >> what is unique is the risk right now is from a fire that started so far on the others the sierra nevada. >> we need to be cognizant that there is fire activity happening in california that we have never seen before. reggie: they are updating us twice today with the fire forecast for the caldor and dixie fire's. that comes from the 48 hour computer simulations that are changing as the weather changes. jobina: the u.s. forest service will close all national forests in california tonight because of the raging wildfires in the state. these closures begin at midnight and last the released september 17. the agency says the goal is to better provide public and firefighter safety. people can't filing the closure can ph

the caldor fire has reached the tahoe basin.it is burning hot and the winds are roaring, pushing these winds closer to south lake tahoe. this is new video south of meyers. flames coming down the ridge on either side of highway 50. >> as we head into the overnight hour, the situation becoming more dire and desperate. this is from the area along highway 89 south of meyers. the fire hitting close to homes. crews with chain saws doing everything they can to protect the homes. >> the fire on both sides of highway 50. here's a landmark you might be familiar. with echo summit. before the fire reached christmas valley, it burned through echo summit. >> at last check the fire is about six miles from south lake tahoe and only 15% contained. the popular vacation destination virtually empty. south lake tahoe under a mandatory evacuation order. >> this will be a tense 24 hours ahead of us. let's begin with cheryl hurd in south lake tahoe. you've been surveying the fire zone. what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, as you can see south lake t

more like a ghost town and the caldor fire is coming from the southwest.and you can see just how ominous it is. >> really thick layer of smoke coming from behind the street later here and it's coming from the southwest from the pacific pushing toward the northeast. and that is why there are mandatory evacuation orders in place for the entire city of south lake tahoe. and it does look based on the traffic situation that people are heeding those orders. take a look, though, at what the traffic situation look like. just a couple of hours ago. take a look at this gridlock from people racing to evacuate some drivers waited in a standstill, they say for more than an hour as they headed east toward the nevada state line now for reference about 20,000 people live in south lake tahoe. most of the people living today where locals as tourism was discouraged this past week due to the poor air quality and that is actually help to with the traffic congestion because on a busy summer day as many as 100,000 people could be up here by the lake. so just imagine how much wor
