impeachment,'s advice and consent, golden age of the senate, a myth talking about clay wester calhounand you get a lot of this from the historians. how did you break this down? and how did you paste it? -- pace it? mark: any good program like this, i think you need moments of tension and moments of levity. you need to have some sort of structure that lets you know where you're going and what the program is about. the easiest way for this one, because this is hard. this is a hard institution to wrap your head around. was to put up a chapter heading so people knew what we were doing and where we were going. just reading some of those, it tells you how many things the senate has to do. legislation, that got constitutional powers that they have for advice and consent, and a ton of other things that we had to explain. so hopefully, it all fits together and hangs together. andas been a labor of love, other things for me, over the course of the time. brian: we only have 30 seconds. there are other things? mark: the other things are, why does this fit? i thought they would work. part of it is

calhoun and henry clay, maybe to complicate things a little. joanne: for sure, it complicates things. that goes back to the idea that i think people think back to the era as a golden age, a bunch of guys wearing black coats. mr. clay! and that's how we imagine the period. you know, there were speechifying, americans memorizing the speechifying but happening all around that was the stuff going on in this book. so congress was a human institution. it wasn't a monument. it wasn't a sort of bastion of eloquence all the time. people went there to hear the speechifying, although, actually, when they did that, they inevitably said that wasn't as good as i thought it was going to be. still, i don't mean to say everything all the time was two guys slugging each other but that said, for sure, i think we need to -- if our history books are telling us that congress is this beautiful, glorious, golden place in this period and we have to get back there, there isn't a beautiful glorious golden place to get back to. broad statement. democracy is a struggle, yo
