we were discussing the word of the california council of seniors. they met in october and they list 16 legislation that was passed by the legislature and signed by the governor that become beneficial to the seniors. and they list 13 legislation how each of these our legislator voted. few tank, 100 percent for the seniors. every one of those items, they voted yes. and ammiano is 73, he did not vote for one item. it's really an outstanding record and hopefully all these legislature will serve us time and time over again. and we also, as i say, the congress of california seniors, they are about 100 members like san francisco, we send three of them to represent us. and they do work in the capitol and in the month of october maybe for the last two weeks they take over the assembly and they, you know, occupy the space, occupy the whole room, and they conduct their business for us, the seniors. and after discussion and they pick up 10 legislation that they are going to work on next year, then -- now there's another layer of sort of oversee what this depart

so in all 50 states if we're going to move a child from illinois to california, california is involved, illinois is involved and there's an assessment of whether that child will be safe if he's moved. child protective services, if a child is removed from the home because of abuse, five relatives come forward to take care of that child, they're all vetted, criminal background check, child abuse check, lots of checks before we move that child and it's the same with or, or doesn't release a child without going through a process of looking at that sponsor. but in our current system we have nothing in place for ensuring that child will be safe and we have no system in place for even making a minimum inquiry about that. so i want to add to what andy said at the beginning about what's happening right now. the number of children arriving at the border has decreased. our beds are at about 65% capacity. so the numbers today are each day approximately 55 children are arriving at the border. in june it was 300 children a day. so it's a significant drop. the causes are uncertain. we don't yet know.

i think that chuck iello was one of our delegates from california. so instead of having these elected delegates and because the budget is so small, they are going to be looking to all the states to put something together that can move information from the states to the white house. and the california association of (inaudible) on aging just met about two months ago, we are now working on what could be a state-wide response to that. a lot of social media will be used to do this but i think san francisco is in such a unique position, given all of the computer labs that we have and all of the senior centers and people that are so involved in our community that we are believing that we can pull together different people here that can send that information on to the white house. so it's exciting. the only other thing i meant to mention in my report is that occasionally at commission we have members of the public who get up and speak to issues that are very, very important to them. and i just wanted to assure the commissioners that we follow-up as a depart

how is first five california talking about this? >> as you just heard from mark thompson, it's a very complex issue but very important. so the purpose of our campaign which is called talk, read, sing is to take this -- the notion of the importance of early brain development and push it out to the public and those families who have young children or who are caregivers of young children and emphasize how important it is to interact with kids and stimulate the brain so that it grows and develops in the earliest years. and in the long run actually works to prevent the achievement gap. if we can get kids to develop their vocabularies and start out in school, not behind their peers, they have a much better chance to succeed in school and in life. but so the campaign really talks about -- we have two psas. 30 seconds long, you can only talk so much about brain development in 30 seconds. we cut to the chase and talk about the importance of that early engagement and language stimulation in the earliest of years from the day a child is born.
