we don't have that in california right now, and i don't think that's good for california.'t think that's good for democracy. >> mark, let's change the subject for a last little look your. catches up on the latest in the los angeles mayor's race. one you kennedy declared this week. what's the importance of this race for the state, and is this race wide open? >> the development, kendra leon who was a former state senate president, ran against dianne feinstein, and as earlier this week, he was a candidate for l.a. mayor, then my number of congress for a lot of things but he's been mentioned as a possible successor of nancy pelosi. it is a wide open race. the position of l.a. mayor is an interesting one. it's not a strong mayor. a lot of the power, much of the power rests with the city council. your mayor of the second biggest city in the united states. it's been a dead end of sorts. is never been an l.a. mayor who's been elected gornor. it's kind of a political debt and until recently, eric garcetti, he did not get the cabinet post he wanted, but he was appointed ambassador t

because that's how they do it in california. california asks for recalls all the time. mount a recall campaign against any statewide elected official for any reason at all if you can achieve the grand results of collecting signatures from just 12% of people who voted in the last election for that seat. not 12% of registered voters but 12% of the number of people who voted in the last election for that seat specifically. that's all you need to be able to get that statewide elected official put up for recall. as low bars go this is kind of so low it just sits there on the floor and invites you to walk on it. and so every governor in california for the past 60 years has faced at least one attempt to recall them. and you will of course recall the successful 2003 recall of democratic california governor gray davis. that's how we ended up bizarrely with governor arnold schwarzenegger for a hot minute. but now the republicans are trying again with this recall attempt they're mounting against democratic governor gavin newsom. the polls close tomorrow tonight -- excuse me, close

he's in california. he was born in arizona. his family moved to california.he worked as a migrant farmer for a short time. but then he becomes a community organizer in the 19 sixties. as a community organizer, he's interested in mexican american rights. he wants to really improve the quality of life for mexican americans. farmworkers, and he goes to california. this again, the names you might be less familiar with is philip veracruz. and this man here. the key point is i'm going to be talking about chavez that this was actually a coalition. which means filipinos and mexican americans, and we should think of this isn't ethnic coalition as well. the fact that the filipino workers were the ones who pushed cesar chavez on strike for the first time. initially, this is 1965 and the goal was to hire at minimum wage. a dollar 50 an hour. the right to unemployment insurance, and also the right to hire a union and have them been hired by the union -- , chavez she wanted more than just a union. -- as a movement for mexican american rights, but also for labor rights. and

in california.downs serve as an impetus, a catalyst for which we use to institute this recall. it was a great, massive effort by californians collectively. it was nonpartisan. democrats and republicans came together. unfortunately i just feel that for californians, we weren't feeling like we had a viable alternative to governor newsom and i believe that's why the recall failed. >> shannon: those are saying that the messaging quit being about governor governor newsom and it turned into a matchup between larry elder and gavin newsom and more of a traditional looking election. there will be many critiques as we look back at this recall election. the focus got lost on what gavin newsom has done wrong versus looking like something that looked like a traditional matter. what do you think? >> i couldn't agree more and i think we have forgotten about the hypocrisy or excepted here in california which is disappointing for me especially when the backdrop of the hypocrisy that we saw many times over and over a

he's in delano, california. names you might be less familiar with are phillip veracruz and this man here. i'm going to be talking about chavez and mexican americans, but this was actually a coalition between filipino workers and mexican americans. we should think about this as an interethnic coalition as well. in fact, the filipino workers pushed chavez on strike the first time. initially this is 1965. the goal was a higher hourly minimum wage of $1.50 an hour, the right to unemployment insurance and also the right to have a union and have them be hired by the union hall. chavez always wanted more than just a union. he thought of this as a larger movement, as a movement for mexican american rights and labor rights. the first strike happens in 1960. chavez uses three tactics to help workers unionize in the agricultural industry. the first was the most in some ways iconic, which is the strike. farm workers were going to go on strike. it's actually the filipino workers, a.w.o.k. they wanted to go on strike. they th
