. >>> six southern california city leaders who made national headlines in a huge salary scandal were plea deals today. this as pre-trial hearings in the case were set to begin. dave lopez on what happened in court. >> all counsel are you ready? >> yes. >> reporter: standing shoulder to shoulder the so-called bell eight nearly stretched the width of the courtroom this morning. the district attorney's office without going into specific details, said that they have offered six of the so-called eight plea bargains. testify against robert rizzo the one-time $800,000 a year city manager and his assistant, over $300,000 a year age he will -- angela you won't go on trial and get a break on sentencing. the six will have to pay back the money that the da says they illegally stoled from the bell city coffers and spend two years behind bars in exchange for their guilty pleas. no comment whatsoever from the district attorney's office other than that the plea bargain has been offered and is on the table. the only comment about the plea bargain came from artiga who told me in the elevator that yes,

the city is investigating muni for problems on its tracks and other safety issues. the californiaty utility commission says the safety violences turned up during 20 inspections over the past year. the cpuc says the staff found defects on the tracks and saw problems with the automatic train control system in subway. muni leaders also don't work fast enough to address concerns. muni insists it is working closely with state regulators to fix the problems as they come up, but muni says the major problem is maintaining and repairing the track, which is more than 30 years old. >>> meantime, google is in the news again, but this time they are trying to sort through so-called tricksters. >> google has to stay on top of the search results. it is in big trouble if it can't consistently return absolutely the best results. it has found all kind of websites, even jcpenneys is trying to trick the search engine to putting their results first through extra links and other ploys. this morning google is trying to weed out less than perfect results. that's a big deal. that's like kfc adjusting their

for comparison, here are the other large cities in california. age 6865, with the median in those five large cities, 15% of the population over 60. whereas in san francisco, between 2006 and 2008, the senior population over 60 comprised 16% of the population. again, and larger segment of the population and a growing segment of the population. in terms of the renters and homeowners, these were interesting statistics. we thought that there were a number of seniors that were homeowners in san francisco. for the most part they purchased their home before 1970. they were not as expensive as they are now. property taxes were not as high. but the pie chart shows is that those spending 30% or more on housing is 32%. at the bottom chart, seniors that are renting are spending a much higher percentage of their income on housing. 57% of those people are paying more than 30% for housing. housing is certainly an issue in the high cost for seniors. from the previous charpoy you know that with the owners -- in place it could be a community, staying in the city or

i believe in the current budget crisis, the state of california and the city of san francisco is experiencingources. the goal of the monitoring committee and the focus of the full-time staff is to ensure standards of care and compliance. it includes cleanliness of the shelter, serving in residence. if i would be appointed, not only with the committee in sure -- ensure cooperation, i would challenge them to expand their responsibilities to identify new resources outside of the san francisco general fund. for example, the committee could work to provide a grant. under the dph umbrella, the committee could tap into staff training. the past seven months, they spent $12,000. it could benefit the shelters such as shared ordering, resources. it is in their purvey to answer the question. in conclusion, if you were to appoint me, i would work to increase collaboration and problem solving and communication between the committee and the shelter. and encourage the committee to spend some of their time working with the shelter to identify resources that would include collaborative grant writing as economi
