we know along the way the california highway patrol evacuated 40 people by helicopter including 30 veneervineyard workers. they were in town trying to get the grapes harvested. they were among the 40 that were saved by the california highway patrol. people ranging in age as well as dogs and cats. >> we were talking earlier about evacuations from kaiser hospital. people that were obviously in a delicate state. there were ambulances lined up and they were taking them to memorial hospital which is in santa rosa but in a safe spot. we were hearing women in labor and the fire -- >> they had to get people out of the hospitals because they were threatened by flames. they took six from each, kaiser permanente and sutter, six of those in greatest need of care to memorial. and then they left empty beds because they thought, we have to be prepared to welcome people. eminences lined up at memorial to go out and track the people who needed most. meanwhile people could be temporarily dismissed from the hospital to a safe place, that is what they did. >> we want to point out, this is called wine country

a california highway patrol officer driving in his patrol car accidentally ran over and killed a man who was crossing a roadway. it happened just before 8-30 last night on highway one south of capistrano road on the border of half moon bay and el granada. that's where kron four's philippe djegal reports the victim was pronounced dead. . >> katie nielsen joining us now live to tell us about some daring rescues by the california highway patrol. >> reporter: they are unsung heroes. helicopter pilots from the chp are credited with saving dozens of lives by helping to evacuate residents trapped by the atlas fire in napa county. the most incredible part, the pilots had no radio communications. they were flying above the firelines looking for anyone who was on the ground trapped by the firestorm. one of the toughest was rescuing a family but didn't have enough room in the helicopter and had to leave the father behind. >> he said to take his family which we did. we dropped them off. we told him we would come back for him and we did and he got out, as well. >> so that father was saved by the california highway patrol pilots. they are credited with saving almost 50 people, five dogs and a cat. chp's golden gate division posted this on social media saying they will continue to attempt rescue missions during the heavy smoke conditions as long as they can see to land. and no doubt in the coming days and weeks we'll hear more of these

driver died when his truck went off a highway and into a tree this morning in san ramon, california highway patrol officials said. someone called the chp at about 7 a.m. to tell them that a big-rig went off southbound interstate highway 680 just north of alcosta boulevard and clipped a vehicle on the right shoulder of the highway. chp spokesman officer tyler hahn said the truck continued through a fence and into a tree. the occupants of the vehicle clipped by the big-rig were not hurt. chp officials said the crash has closed northbound san ramon valley road between alcosta boulevard and pine valley road because the truck came to a stop on san ramon valley road. chp officials do not have an estimate for when san ramon valley road will reopen. the driver identity has not been revealed. the highway patrol says he was in his 60s and have been delivering packages as a contract worker for the u.s. postal service. fatigue and lack of sleep are among the aspects they are looking into to determine the cause of the crash.>> being an early morning collision, that is something that we look into. drivers keep
