calistoga. you can also see lake berryessa there. this is a rural area, but there are small communities throughout. they are surrounded by the dry brush fueling the fire, and they are on steep and rugged terrain. this has damaged at least five structures, forcing crews to evacuate more than 180 homes. at this hour, it continues to burn, but it is 30% contained. >> there are horse ranches in that area. smoke can be seen. it is dark, ugly smoke. this is what it looks like from our san rafael camera. the wind is very erratic. that's why we've seen the fire shift from the pope area to the lake berryessa area. >> you can see it's now at the stage where it's beginning to create its own weather. you get a lot of hot air. it has to go somewhere, that air is going to be rising, and eventually it does have to come back down, and it's going to create downdrafts. it is very steep terrain, as we mentioned. and the brush is so, so bone dry as many of us know with this drought in effect. this is going to be a firefight that could go on for a couple

-- calistoga, polk valley, part of a westerly breeze and there is not much change in that breeze pattern and the fog is not going to be swept away. there are plenty of low clouds, cool to warm to hot well enough inland and for others, it is 60s and 70s, here is sal. >>> we are looking at a commute where traffic is moving along well on this thursday morning as you drive passed the carquinez bridge and that whole trip will take you about a few minutes, this this is a baseball game and 5:25 start and it should put more into the city for the afternoon commute and i do want to show you 280 is close between 101 and kings street and the ultimate route is highway 101 and happening today, a normally busy stretch as we have been mentioning for the entire long hallway weekend, alex will tell us about the details because of this weekend closure and the giants do play at home and at at&t, a lot of people use 280 to get too and from the game. they are not allowing them to the northbound lanes and instead everybody will be funneled to get to the downtown area and that could lead to some serious backups

this is east of calistoga. let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. i see that picture behind you. that was an incredible sight earlier today. >> certainly. this is available on our nbc bay area twitter page as well. you can get a closer look at that. when you get fires, it really creates its own weather. you get smoke plumes going up 2,000 to 4,000 feet. you get all this hot air. it rises up and eventually cools down and it has to go somewhere. so it heads downwards and creates these erratic downdrafts. that's what firefighters face today and likely through tomorrow with a very tough effort coming with more hot weather in the forecast. we're going have more on that coming up. but i do want to get you the latest conditions if you live in and around this area. the good news, at least right now at 11:17 is we're not undergoing any kind of windstorm event in the overnight hours. i don't think winds are really going to top 15 to 20 miles per hour. and we have increased humidity. so really a little bit of recovery here for the firefighters. at least over t

>> it's burning between calistoga and lake berry, and we are live from napa county. >> we are at the command center for the fire, this is as close as we can get to butts canyon, this is where the fire is burning. that charred hillside is that's where the fire started at noon today. you can see if you look up the hill, there's still smoke and it's still burning, there's still some flames and the other side of the hillside is where the damage is. the latest update is this fire burned 2,500 saeshgz so -- acres so far. 200 homes in the subdivision were order today evacuate around 1927 this afternoon -- 3:00, this afternoon, and everyone was able to get out in time. the 50 people still in the subdivision they are sheltering in place. the division chief said he's confident they're safe, the fire crews were able to create fuel breaks around the homes. and overall this is a tough fire fight and so far they believe that three buildings have burned, but they're not sure if they're homes, and adding to the challenges, the division chief says the direction of the wind has started to change. >> r

now, the fire is burning in a steep terrain between calistoga and lake berryessa near the napa and lake county line there. anne makovec joins us live with the latest. at least you can see things now, right, anne? >> reporter: that's right. what we can see now is a lot of smoke filling the canyon. i'm off butts canyon road right now. we can see some of the structures that have burned, some of the five structures that have been burned in this fire. one of them was a home. all told, 1 80 homes have been evacuated. those evacuations orders it still are still in place. so far 2700 acres have burned. it started yesterday afternoon in pope valley. it exploded into a massive wildfire and jumped several roads and burned five buildings. it is burning in both napa and lake counties. and from its behavior so far, it is proving as you can see very dangerous. ask. >> we are seeing fires burn with intensity that we typically see later in the year. you add weather conditions, hot temperatures, low humidities, strong winds and fires are going to burn much faster than this one today. >> reporter: as far

calistoga was only 75 and 74 healdsburg. petaluma 66 degrees. a sign of much cooler air not only at the surface but also aloft. the breeze has been coming down a little bit. it was rip roaring at travis at 30, 35. concord is decreasing. they are southerly so there's still a southerly breeze heading up the valley. slight westerly for most locations including sfo northwest, west and then livermore west. san jose has had southeast most of the day. thunderstorms continue to pop up over the sierra right on cue. a little quieter today. the fog will be back tonight. ukiah is 87. sacramento is only 78. tahoe is warmer than that. it's hot up there. the fog will be back. it looks like it will start to burn off sooner. low clouds, a little breezy but not too bad. the wind can pick up at times. 10, maybe some of the windiest locations get up to 30. the morning clouds will be back tonight and tomorrow. we call it the fog. sunny, breezy, clouds made it well inland. i think they will burn off sooner. 4th of july is looking near normal like we had this morning.

that fire is burning in the pope valley area east of calistoga in saint helena.vacuation orders are in place notice butts canyon and snell -- in the butts canyon and snell area and christin ayers reports. >> reporter: the fire is burning actively. it nearly doubled in size. you can see that great big plume of smoke. the fire burning actively just beyond that ridge. cal fire saying it has burned at least 1,000 acres and was only 10% contained at last report. we saw heavy smoke and fire from the air. chopper 5 giving you an expansive view of the flames. the fire spreading so fast due to the drought. lots of tall dry grass keeping those flames going. we also got a view of the flames from the ground, as well. take a look at the firefight up close, firefighters shooting water on the flames on the ground trying to keep some of those spot fires which we see many of them out here from spreading any further along the roads out here. and that fire is not just threatening homes tonight. we have also heard it is threatening livestock. this is a rural area so a lot of farm an

north bay 80s to 90 in calistoga. 84 in santa rosa. what happens when you get the heat during the day in the sea breeze cranks up as warm air rises inland and creates that vacuum effect where cool air starts to spill inland toward the evening. windy around the bay area. let's talk about that mountain thundershower chance. for now it's over the sierra. we're seeing clouds. during the day tomorrow we'll continue to see the chances of thundershowers on the increase which if we don't get enough rain that could cause a few spot fires in the high country. some of that moisture is going to creep toward the bay area. you'll see it tonight in the form of a sunset which will include those mid and high-level clouds drifting in from the east. as we get back into the work week, some of that moisture as it approaches the coastal hilltops, especially the north bay, could trigger an isolated shower or thundershower to the north out near santa rosa. we'll talk about those changes in the forecast and a big cool-down on the way in your seven-day forecast

it's happening in the pope valley 20 miles east of calistoga. can also see lake berryessa there. this is a rural area, but there are small communities throughout. they are surrounded by the dry brush fueling the fire, and they are on steep and rugged terrain. this has damaged at least five structures, forcing crews to evacuate more than 180 homes. at this hour, it continues to burn, but it is 30% contained. >> there are horse ranches in that area. smoke can be seen. it is dark, ugly smoke. this is what it looks like from our san rafael camera. the wind is very erratic. that's why we've seen the fire shift from the pope area to the lake berryessa area. >> you can see it's now at the

and into the north bay we have 88 degrees in santa rosa and still 90 in calistoga. short-term, we're watching here the return of low clouds on the coast. now there's something interesting happening off to the coast. you'll see it at sunset tonight. tropical moisture, mid-level clouds spilling out of the sierra. this easterly wave coming up out of southern nevada, drifting east to west. we're not used to moisture coming to the bay area from that direction but sometimes the systems drift out of the desert southwest. right now high clouds coming in toward sunset. during the day tomorrow and again tuesday, for elevations into the north bay hilltops, we'll have to watch out for a slight chance of showers. the high clouds coming in. overnight into tomorrow, as you wake up should be an interesting sunrise with clouds out there. mostly cloudy start to the morning. you see the thunderstorms around the sierra for the afternoon. that is for monday afternoon. notice the cloud cover here wrapping up into the north bay from ukiah into santa rosa, a slight chance of isolated showe
