but new research suggests it's nine miles longer, extending up to calistoga. joining us now is the geologist behind the findings. belle, thank you so much for joining us by phone. how did you make this discovery that this fault line is nine miles longer, and were you surprised? >> it was a little bit of a surprise. when we set out to improve the mapping of the fault after the 2014 earthquake, we did have access to data that hadn't been previously used to map faults, which is lidar data. >> what does this mean? it's longer. does that mean it's capable of an even stronger earthquake? >> that's correct, yes. so the length of a fault is what tells us how big an earthquake it could possibly produce. so prior to this new mapping, the previously recognized section of fault could have approximately produced a 6.8 earthquake. and with the additional mapping, that's now extended to 7, which doesn't seem like a large change, but it's actually about twice as much energy released. >> wow. so how active is this west napa fault, and how does it compare to other well-known fa

a cool 47, though in calistoga. 49 kelsey, though, and 57 degrees in well, here we go. the storm system is not very strong. mostly energy ended up in the pacific northwest. we're kind of catching the trailing edge of the system so you can see right there. some of that moisture rolling on through parts of the north bay. really the clouds not gathering until late in the day. and then there we go. we got a chance, some raindrops out there right now. that's exactly what we're looking at. a few scattered light showers possibly in the petaluma and the santa rosa. but you can see even there it is very scattered. and that's what we're going to see overnight tonight. and tomorrow morning, too. high pressure sitting off the coastline. it's allowing of these a frontal system just to right over the top of that ridge. but as they do, they weaken quite a bit. so keeping things a little bit unsettled at jet stream is a bit lower. further up the coastline. i'm talking about more substantial rainfall, but that has not been the case. so this is how it looks right now in time now for over

just take down a bit in calistoga. 38, napa. so these numbers going to be freezing early tomorrow morning, especially in parts of the north bay frost much of the bay to even inside the bay. i think we'll see some patchy frost early on tomorrow morning that a mix of sunshine and a couple of clouds and have more of the same as we head in towards sunday. right now. we've got a little bit of an offshore wind and that is key to getting these cold temperatures bringing you that dry air from the cannes. and that means organ watch as temperatures drop off. but still brewing in the pacific northwest. they're going to see another round of some heavy rainfall. that is not good news for them. remember just a few days ago that 8 plus inches of rain from that atmospheric river event. they're going to get more of that likely to see some more flooding while california staying high and dry, but maybe not for long. here's long-range forecast models we get to the weekend doesn't look bad. few more clouds coming our way as we get toward the middle

this was on franz valley road just outside of calistoga this afternoon. firefighters used chainsaws and got some help from someone with a backhoe actually to remove that tree. and, yes, new snow. fresh powder in tahoe. palisades posting this video this afternoon from its roundhouse lift. let's bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. i see green. is there rain right now, or is it forming and coming in? >> we've got spotty rain we're tracking right now. the system itself, it's spinning right here. the thing that's going to be different about this storm, it's going to move right on down the coastline. not only hitting us but also los angeles. right now on that current doppler scan, you can see a few spotty showers up towards the north bay. i don't see it picking up until 2:00 in the morning, north bay and coast. for the morning commute, that's going to be a mess here, 5:00, 6:00, and 7:00. >> a lot of people still even getting out of town now, not just flying or driving. >> i think totals are going to be the highest toward the north bay and coastline

in calistoga. so, you know, we're going from here. it is going to get cold out there. storm clouds rolling on through kind of spreading to the south as we head throughout the day today, ice storm rolling on by without causing too much of a nuisance. and now here are set things kind of quieting down outside just a couple of scattered light showers in the south bay over the mountain tops. other than we're drying things out outside the winds going start to switch, become more of an offshore wind overnight tonight and really this whole storm system going to wind down. still some more snow up in the sierra nevada, a widely scattered showers elsewhere around the state. but this front going head on out of town and here comes high pressure sliding on in, going to make for a beautiful day tomorrow. but you notice the arrows here, the given you an idea of the wind direction, that's that offshore wind going to that dry air kind of settling in that means tonight. it's going to clear out get very cold in spots is that air is very dry, allowing the temperatures drop off in a hurry o

some cooler temperatures in the north bay. 46 degrees in calistoga. 46 in kelsey bill and 50 degrees right now in cloverdale. so overall, though, looks like we're going to see partly cloudy skies, a chance of some widely scattered showers as we head through the night tonight. i think most of that will come before midnight and then tomorrow, another weak cold front comes through very similar and we're going to see more clouds rolling in specially late in the day with a slight chance of some showers. i think the best chance that will come in the north bay. and then this weekend, more clouds on the way, a little bit warmer and a slight chance of sprinkles, too. we have. it's a breeze out there today. some of those winds gusting to almost 30 miles an hour. the start of back off just a little bit now, but still gusting to 21 in san francisco. overall, though, this pattern you see this week cold front sliding on by and then it just kind of loses energy running right over the top of ridge of high pressure com listing off the coastline. and you can see the scattered showers trying to pop up

and 43 already and getting chilly there in calistoga. the storm system really kind of winding down. now most the showers coming to an was a nice little storm system is a rotating on through the bay area. 3 with that. that rain, you can see it sliding in the south bay by the afternoon. kind of moving out of town. still more. that rain continuing up over the sierra nevada. we're seeing some snow there. a few scattered showers around the state but really love the energy now start to dissipate from the storm system, but not before brought us some beneficial showers overnight. tonight we'll see high pressure just kind of slide its way in. and you notice the winds seemed offshore flow. that's really important to get that cold air developing tonight. it will bring that dry air back in the bay area, drier, well cools off a lot faster. the moist air. that's why these temperatures really going to take a dip overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. long right forecast for you as we head in toward tomorrow. looks like a great day. lots of sunshine. high pressure sliding overhead on the weekend.

this is west of calistoga. cal fire is asking everyone to drive with caution and stay vigilant on the roadways with more rain coming to the bay area. kron four's lawrence karnow joins us look at lawrence. yeah, it looks like things are going to get underway very shortly. we've had scattered showers out there right now. kind thing. >> every rain year starts out differently. this one? yeah. kind of vote on the dry side overall as these are rainfall amounts running below the average for this time of year. but we might make that up in a hurry overnight tonight in the next 24 to 36 hours outside, we've got cloudy skies out there right now. we've got a couple of scattered pop up showers over the past. 48 hours yet, not that we've had over 3 inches of rain in santa rosa almost 3 inches of rain. almost 2 inches in napa, san francisco over an inch and 3 quarters. oakland over an inch of rain. and how about that? san jose over half an inch of rain. now you add these to the totals for the season. we're still running below

calistoga santa rosa.on our way to temperatures near freezing and we're going to see i think a better morning tomorrow. it's still going to be cold, but not quite as cold as we are this morning. so near freezing in the valleys and then cold and frosty for tomorrow as well. we have a freeze watch, which is basically the same thing for your sunday morning. and then dry and milder as we get to the middle of next week. but we are tracking some changes as we get towards the end of next weekend. here's a look at today, hour by hour. the high clouds are with us this is saturday, 430. and then they get a little thicker. those high clouds on sunday. there's a system to the north. we stay dry, though. so if you're putting the lights up or getting the tree going, shopping, no problems there into monday. same scenario. so but we will be seeing slightly warmer conditions in the south bay. then temperatures will be in the low to mid 60s. so actually a little bit warmer there. we'll see upper 50s. and as we go through th

bay at about 8:00 to 9:00, and maybe picking up a little more just around the santa rosa area, to calistoga, at about 9:00 to 10:00. moving into san francisco before lunchtime and down the peninsula, with some light rain to start, and it may at times get a little heavier for the afternoon. at 1:00 to 2:00, it's approaching the tri-valley and moving into the south bay by later into the evening commute, and then starting to taper off for parts of the north bay later tonight. it's still going to be a steady rain for parts of the east bay, as well as the peninsula. and then we just see some lingering showers into the day tomorrow, and then a bit of a break from late thursday into friday before the next storm comes in. once again, we do have a couple of storms coming in. the first round for much of the bay area from san francisco on southward looks to be about a quarter inch of rain or less. look at livermore, a few hundredths of an inch of rain. but then for the north bay it could be closer to one inch of rain around santa rosa, and then when the next round comes in in total, we could see a wid
