. >> reporter: this is john boys restaurant, a very popular place here in calloway. one of many businesses flattened. we've seen homes with the roofs ripped off. we've seen tractor trailers tipped over, tossed around the parking lot. it seems that ground zero, at least where the hurricane ashore. 20 minutes later the mexico beach, i can show you the destruction. the destruction is everywhere you look here in mexico. pile of rubble in the road. this is very common. 3 1/2 miles of mexico beach and the debris is everywhere. houses ripped off their foundation. if you look at the two haases on the front lawn of this hotel structure, those houses aren't supposed to be there. they came from somewhere else. the storm surge came in. they floated all the way to where they are now which really complicates things. we know about the physical destruction. what we don't know is the human toll. 280 people elected to ride out the storm here in mexico beach. there's no way to communicate with those people now, so search and rescue is a top priority. the problem is all of this debris,

that's a utility pole that sliced right through a waffle house in calloway, florida.ning me now is democratic senator bill nelson of florida. i just want to start with your reaction to what you're seeing on the ground. we've seen blocks and blocks of homes leveled, businesses destroyed. what are you hearing from your constituents? >> just exactly what you've been reporting. it's devastation and as you go east of panama city, that's where the -- the right side of the hurricane, the most ferocious winds were and mexico beach. i imagine when we finally get into the next town which is port st. joe, i think you're going to find devastation, particularly mexico beach, because there's no barrier island outside of it, so it was getting the full force of the wind and the water. further east port st. joe is a natural harbor with a cape around it, cape sandblast. it would have had some protection, but no doubt it's going to be like not anything we've seen since hurricane andrew in 1992 down south of miami. it's going to be like that over there in those small little populated are

. >> i heard it's utter devastation in calloway, and they're probably about two to three miles from the tyndall bridge, and no one's heard from them. >> in your long walk here, you did come across some deputies. what did they tell you? >> i came across a deputy sheriff and a county worker and they said that it was devastated and there was search and rescue going on over there, and the deputy said i'm not going to lie there are deaths and injuries. >> >> reporter: they told you that? >> so the lack of communications, being cut off, you're obviously anxious. >> and i can't get out because where we are, there's trees blocking the roads, that's why i had to walk. i walked for four miles. i came here hoping to find some of my business partners, which i have, and hopefully find some phone lines, and there's been some nice people to loan me their phones. >> reporter: what you're experiencing is what happens after a storm, this inability to find out what's going on. we understand your greatest fear. we understand the anxiety that you're experiencing. let's assume somebody watching looks at this

it's not just mexico beach, there are also areas like panama city and calloway, other neighborhoods juste still without power. gas is scarce. and it is still very difficult for those areas. power crews are working sun up to sun down to restore electricity. some areas, including the town of lynn haven, the mayor there is telling residents she expects power to be out there for two months so this is a very long road to recovery. there's many questions about the rebuilding effort here whether how expensive it's going to be to rebuild some of these homes even stronger than they were here before. here in the panhandle, building codes weren't like they were in southeast florida and miami-dade county after hurricane andrew where some buildings were rebuilt to withstand 175 file per hour winds. here in the panhandle it was a situation where they had building codes 120 to 150 and hurricane michael roared here with winds of 155 miles per hour. this is a massive undertaking, this recovery effort, and it's only just beginning. >> still got people unaccounted for. thank you so much for keeping this st

so we have set up a central hub on the east side of panama city and calloway. one of the only places we can get cell signal. we have crews that are constantly out day and night working with local officials and then they check in with us to make sure we can update them with information. i currently right now have over 1,000 gallons of diesel being delivered and 5,000 pounds of ice this morning and 10 pallets of watered delivered to the eoc in panama city. we have volunteers that go through the gulf coast, east coast and have supplies coming in from all states. it is an all-volunteer organization. we're a registered 501c3 and people put their lives in jeopardy to help out others. we knew it was like in new orleans during katrina and that is how this organization started. >> sandra: based on your experience with hurricanes, what do the recovery and rebuild efforts look like from this storm compared to others? >> this is definitely long-term. harvey doesn't compare to this one. people have lost everything, not just water damage. but going back to their property and
