it's taken caltran longer than projected to fix a crack in a bridge support. one lane is still shut down. terry mcsweeney is on the bridge with an update. terry? >> caltran's crews came out here half an hour ago. they rolled the truck up to the problem. that flashing yellow light. there's no work over there right now. hoped to have everything fixed up by yesterday's commute. back out here this morning get at it. you can see that the crack in a steel beam underneath the bridge. it's a small crack and a 30-foot beam but enough for concern. the repairs consist of 6 foot long steel plates above and blow that beam. a beam installed nine years ago as part of a earthquake retrofit. >> allows the bridge to move from side to side 3 feet either way so it was roll with the punches during a earthquake. >> the folks at caltran are pointing out there's a silver lining. that is when they go around doing their work, their inspections to see that the bridges are safe they work and turn up problems and turned up this 9 inch crack in a 30 foot long beam and they are on the case.

[ indiscernible ] >> reporter: these are picks of the actual work being done under the bridge. workers are installing these steel plates. the repair is taking longer than expected since workers are also bracing the other side of the beam because it could be suspentable to cracking. >> it attaches to the girders. so the steel beam does help the girders take part of the structural load. the bridge is able to roll with the punches. we got plates fitted, fake sure everything was lined up, in the exact position. once they got that done they were able to drill the holes through the steel and through there we will put the bolts. >> reporter: is it unusual for it to crack? >> it is. wasn't something we were expecting. the silver lining is the inspection was a success. >> reporter: the repair work isn't stopping those from taking the bridge. >> i am not too concerned. >> reporter: caltrans doesn't know what time the repair work will be complete tomorrow so they are asking drivers to take alternate routes. meanwhile, once the work

caltrans says it finished at 4:30 this afternoon, 4.5 hours earlier than expected.arly this morning, crews started the final phase of putting in the second tier of the tower. caltrans calls it a milestone in the construction of the new bay bridge eastern span. crews have been working around the clock since monday to get that second tier lifted up and bolted into place. that second part is four parts like four legs of a stool. it's taken 16 to 20 hours to put each part in place. each part is 107 feet tall an weighs more than 600 tons. caltrans says it finished early because of the weather. >> we thought we get more rain than we did at the end so that's been very good and that will allow to us complete here just a couple of hours earlier than we thought that we might have to take. other challenges? i think we have met them all. this was a very smooth operation for the most part. equipment challenges in the process, but overcame all of those. >> reporter: the tower now raises 10 stories above the bridge so it's at eye level on the upper deck. drivers have been good abo
