caltrans has closed fifth avenue between embarcadero and 8th. that section of road runs under i-880 which is the subject of the major construction job. kraig debro joins us with more on the project. good afternoon, kraig. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. work on this 170 million-dollar project started at 7:30 this morning. that's when crews shut down fifth avenue. take a look at those four metal beams on either side of fifth avenue. well, we were here this morning when crews moved them into p lace. according to a construction supervisor i spoke with, each of these things weighs 19 tons. each was moved in by a crane. this is called the fifth avenue retrofit project. it's one of eight up and down -- down 880. crews say this part will be done in 20 -- 2013. they will do this in three s tages of when the project is finished, it will like like your screen on the right. it will be up to 12 feet wider and seismically safer than the old road built after world war ii. crews have to do it in part in order to accommodate i-80 traffic. >> this is one of t

caltrans says across the bay area, the recent rains accelerated road erosion. this was the scene on the high street overpass on 880 in oakland, a two-foot hole ripped right through the concrete. the hole snarled traffic on 880 for more than six hours. caltrans says weather may have contributed to the problem but mostly blames the hole on wear and tear. still, caltrans says the days after storms are often busy ones for its crews. they are also busy days at this automotive shop in san jose. >> pretty often that you see this problem a lot of times, spindles, ball joints, tied rod, all kind of suspend work. >> reporter: potholes are to blame for the damage on this. the damage to the driver roughly $800 to replace both front wheel bearings. >> so, if you don't avoid the potholes, a good 7, $800? >> yes. so you better be really careful when you drive. >> reporter: commuters say potholes are sometimes unavoidable. >> i ruin my tires every day going down monterey highway and i drive a lot and they are everywhere. >> they all over the place, especially in the highway. i
