it looks like caltrans is confident this temporary fix will hold for now. here is some footage from the drama yesterday. it began at 11 am when chunks of concrete help from the upper deck onto the lower deck damaging at least one car in the morning. caltrans shut down all but one lane of traffic while they looked into the problem, and by the afternoon more chunks of concrete started falling so they shut down the bridge completely through the evening commute. it was a brutal drive home even by the bay area standards. they were trying to drive to the north with highway 30 seven or to the south on the bay bridge sitting in traffic for hours. they have a temporary player -- repair with the metal plates and 8 pm all the lanes were back open. >> the metal plates are a short- term repair and over the weekend we will assess this more to figure out the long- term plan for the long-term fixes for the bridge. >> reporter: caltrans is put in an emergency order to get a contractor here very quickly over the weekend for a permanent fix. again, all lanes are back open on

in fact, caltrans inspects the expansion joints every two years. the last inspection was last august. >> we deering everything to the best of our abilities and we go through the entire bridge very carefully. >> reporter: at this point caltrans doesn't know what caused the expansion joint to fail, whether it's just wear and tear or a big truckload may be to blame. while installing a larger steel plate is a temporary fix, work on a permanent fix will begin monday. crews will have to replace the entire expansion joint which means lane closures. caltrans hopes to do the work overnight to limit the impact on traffic during the peak commute hours. >> on monday they shouldn't see anything because the work will be taking place during the nighttime hours. >> reporter: the permanent fix may take weeks to complete and cost roughly $300,000. now because of this incident, crews will be on the bridge to inspect every single expansion joint to make sure that each one is safe. now as for this temporary fix, crews will shut down one lane of traffic in each directio

it looks like caltrans is confident the repairs will hold for now. here's the westbound lanes into san rafael but here's the buddies from the drama yesterday that began at 11 am. chunks of concrete, some as big as a football, falling from the upper to the lower deck damaging at least one car. that was in the morning. caltrans shutdown eastbound lanes while they look into the problem but more concrete started falling in the afternoon so they shut the bridge down completely for the evening commute. 80,000 people use that bridge every day, a brutal drive home even for the bay area standards, using highway 30 seven or south to the bay bridge, sitting in traffic for hours. they finally have a to pray repair install with big metal plates. by 8 pm all lanes were back open. >> the metal plates are a short- term repair. obviously what we will do is over the weekend to assess it more, and figure out the long- term plan for the long-term fixes for the bridge. >> reporter: caltrans has put in an order for an emergency crew to come in this weekend. from what we a

caltrans says the fix will take 2-weeks to finish. this starts february 18th. ( robin ) vallejo police are investigating an officer involved shooting that killed a man saturday night. it happened in front of the taco bell on admiral callaghan lane saturday night. police say they found a man unresponsive in the drive-thru with a gun in his lap. officers say they noticed the vehicle was in "drive" and that the car was also locked. they say they made several efforts to stop the car from moving forward. police say the driver suddenly began to move and they shot him after he reached for the handgun on his lap. the driver was pronounced dead on the scene.
