caltrans says chains are now required on both eastbound highway 50 and interstate 80. those two main highways linking the bay area to the lake tahoe area. those highways are expected to be crowded all weekend. >> it's exciting because it hasn't snowed in a while, so i don't live where it snows. i like seeing it. >> my only worry in the first snow of the season because nobody's really used to it. so i kind of wonder what everybody else is going to do. >> the chp is urging drivers to check the current road conditions before heading up to lake tahoe this weekend. and this winter, the price of having chains put on your tires along i-80 has gone up. caltrans says licensed chain installers will now charge $40 to put them on and $30 for removal. one chain installer, who started 47 years ago, talked to us about the higher cost $5 on $3 off in 1977 78. >> that was the year i started putting chains on. now it's 40. >> it's still a fair price. i think 40 is fair. >> i mean, it's up there, but it's fair. you know, you don't have to get out. it's a cold job. and the main thing is y

now, these photos from caltrans shows some of the damage. the road closure in the sierra starts in the hills above paradise. it cuts off access to several mountain communities. expect that highway to be closed for at least a week. as crews cleared the debris. in placer county, the continuing search for two people last seen while fishing on the american river south of auburn. the placer county sheriff's office says three men were fishing on the river when two of them were pulled into the river current. deputies are determined to find them. >> right now, they're currently searching from point last seen from the shoreline to river's edge. we also have a combination of our placer county sheriff dive team and also technical rescue team from cal fire. they're doing a joint efforts when it comes to searching the river again from shoreline and any waterways. >> chp is also using drones in this search. >> there's only one week left for students applying to the state schools in california. the deadline is monday, december 2nd for all ucs and most csus

up in the sierra, caltrans lifted chain controls along i-80 today.nd if you want to head up to the mountain, maybe now is the time to go because those restrictions, they're going to be returning fairly soon as there is a lot more snow in the forecast. caltrans and chp strongly advising drivers against traveling to the lake tahoe area. this coming weekend. now, the first electric hydrofoil ferry in the u.s. is coming to lake tahoe. companies fly tahoe and candela in sweden are behind the ferry. the candela p-12 provides a much needed north to south connection across the lake, cutting travel time in half, taking just about 30 minutes. the ferry also cuts down on emissions. a similar ferry has already been launched in stockholm's waterways. we spoke with the ceo of fly tahoe about the scale of the ride. >> this ferry holds 30 people, holds bikes, holds skis in my case a snowboard and we of course are wheelchair accessible as well. that's one of our missions here, is to make this a safe and comfortable ride that's accessible to all locals and tourists al

caltrans is making emergency barrier repairs to the railing along 101 and i-80. here's a map of what exactly will close. it's the westbound i-80 ramp to northbound 101, and this will close to traffic, as i mentioned midnight, and will stay closed for about 24 hours. also closed the on ramp at seventh and harrison streets to southbound 101. here's a look at that ramp from google street view. and this is the final full closure for this project, which has been going on since september. caltrans will still have some partial lane closures, but the work should be done by december. a long awaited and controversial costco is set to open its doors in pleasanton. the store, near the stoneridge shopping center at the five 8680 interchange, will open the day before thanksgiving. that's one of the busiest days, of course, for grocery stores and construction of this store was held up by legal challenges from local residents. they said it would negatively impact air quality and traffic. city leaders, though, argue the store will provide a big boost to local sales tax revenue. t
