a 20—year—old from cambridgeshire who's spent a week in intensive care says he can't believe young peoplef his lungs has stopped functioning. he even had a goodbye phone call with his family. thankfully, he is now recovering — and he has been speaking tojon ironmongerfrom his hospital bed. shallow breathing this is jay. he's 20 years old and suffers with asthma. but just after christmas, he got covid, too. so i've got a headache, shortness of breath, and then i was bedbound. i was calling my dad and sister, like, drenched in sweat. i couldn't move, i couldn't eat. they had to literally physically get me out of bed to go to the toilet because my body was in shock. he was admitted to hinchingbrooke hospital with pneumonia on new year's eve. from here on upwards was the only working part of my lungs. so the rest of my lungs went into type one respiratory failure. so it was like... ..for, like, days — and that's how it was for days. ijust could never catch my breath. i've had the mask on for five hours, and they just swapped me over to this. jay's condition spiralled rapidly, and he was moved
