camilla bernal has the latest. >> police have identified and arrested a los angeles man that they believe is responsible for four different killings in four days. three of them being unhoused individuals. according to authorities, this started last sunday and he killed unhoused individuals both sunday and monday in the early morning hours and then on tuesday, he's responsible for a follow-home robbery and killing the father of two young children. and on wednesday, they say he killed another unhoused individual, but authorities are looking for initially the person responsible for the follow-home robbery and killing and they were able to stop this individual thanks to a traffic stop and they say they were able to arrest him there, but it was days later that they connected the dots and also believe that he was also responsible for the killing of the unhoused individuals. here is what the l.a. chief of police had to say. >> mr. powell's vehicle has been documented as being at the murder scene of all three homicides and his image is similar with the description. >> they're still trying to help

. >> cnn's camilla bernal is joining us from los angeles. what is the latest there?> reporter: so authorities believe what happened here is a person shot three unhoused people while they were alone. all three of them are believed to have been killed while they were sleeping in an open area, whether that be a sidewalk or an alley, and all in nearby areas here in los angeles. the first incident happened on sunday at around 3:00 in the morning, the next one happening on monday at 5:00 in the morning, and the third wednesday at around 2:30 in the morning. authorities telling all of los angeles to be careful and if you have family members, to reach out to them if they are living on the streets, because they do not know whether this person could kill again. they say this is a person who attacked the unhoused population, shooting them and just walking away. authorities did release a photo of a man they believe is responsible for this. they are asking for the public's help to try to nail this down. this is, of course, a city that houses one of the largest unhoused population

let's start with camilla bernal on the coast of manhattan beach, california.you seeing today? >> reporter: here in manhattan beach consistently seeing about 5 to 10-foot waves. you're seeing people right now having to run a little because that water is pushing higher and higher in some cases. technically, the pier here is closed and people are being told to stay away from the beach, but you're seeing a lot of people coming here to watch this, because it is beautiful. but authorities are saying it could also be dangerous. that's why the pier here in manhattan beach is closed. i want to show you just the crowd here taking pictures and looking at the waves. what we know is that the beaches up and down california, a lot of them are closed, piers are closed and people are being told to stay away. here in los angeles county and santa barbara county and ventura county, the national weather service said you'd likely see waves between 15 and 20 feet in the center coast. all of a sudden, you never really know how tall these waves are going to be and how severe it's goin

cnn national correspondent camilla bernall is on the coast in california. what is the situation there right now? so throughout the day we've been seeing these massive waves over and over again, maybe about five to ten feet in this area in particular. of course you can see them best when they crash onto the pier. there's a lot of people here that have gathered to take pictures, to see these waves because really that's the only thing you can do. a lot of times the waves crashing and really pushing in a lot further than people think, and then you'll see all these people making a run for it because they do come at you fast. now the pier here in manhattan beach is closed. but i want to show how a lot of the people at the entrance of the pier are gathering to do the same, to take that pictures, to look at the waves and to really see what's going on here. now this pier is closed, as i mentioned, but a lot of the piers up and down the california coast are closed, as well. in this area in particular, manhattan beach, los angeles county, santa barbara, those areas, t

cnn's karina bernal is joining us now. camilla, tell us what you are learning. >> hey, brianna. >> reporter: the shooter, a 67-year-old career college professor. as you mentioned, someone who, apparently, applied for a job at the university and did not get it. that is why sources are saying this is a possible motive. although authorities are saying this is still an ongoing investigation and it will take some time to get to the bottom of exactly why and how this all unfolded. we do know that the shooter also had connections with schools in georgia and north carolina. he died after a confrontation with authorities right outside one of the buildings at the university. this all happened right before noon yesterday authorities saying students were out, celebrating. they had an event with food and gains and were preparing for their final exams, which happened next week. all of this happened, according to authorities, he moved through multiple buildings before having that confrontation with police outside of one of the buildings. unfortu
